Random Mating in a Hybrid Zone Between Two Putative Climate-Adapted Bird Lineages With Predicted Mitonuclear Incompatibilities.

Biochemical and evolutionary interactions between mitochondrial and nuclear genomes ('mitonuclear interactions') are proposed to underpin fundamental aspects of biology including evolution of sexual reproduction, adaptation and speciation. We investigated the role of pre-mating isolation in maintaining functional mitonuclear interactions in wild populations bearing diverged, putatively co-adapted mitonuclear genotypes. Two lineages of eastern yellow robin Eopsaltria australis-putatively climate-adapted to 'inland' and 'coastal' climates-differ by ~7% of mitogenome nucleotides, whereas nuclear genome differences are concentrated into a sex-linked region enriched with mitochondrial functions.

Leveraging nanoparticle environmental health and safety research in the study of micro- and nano-plastics.

Lessons learned, methodologies, and application of tools that have been developed within the context of research on the environmental impacts, health, and safety of nanomaterials (nano-EHS) provide a solid foundation for research on nano/microplastics. In this communication, we summarize key discoveries obtained through major research efforts over the last two decades in the area of nano-EHS that are applicable for the study of micro- and nano-plastics (referred to here more generally as particulate plastics). We focus on how non-equilibrium particle transport processes affect: 1) bio-physico-chemical mechanisms of particle toxicity and determining dose-response relationships; 2) the potential for biouptake, bioaccumulation, translocation, trophic transfer and intergenerational effects of particulate contaminants; 3) extrapolations from laboratory experiments to complex systems and the impact of environmental transformations; 4) the formulation of functional assays as a basis for predicting the impacts of particulate contaminants in complex environments; 5) the relative importance of incidental particles compared with engineered particles and, 6) experience with data platforms, curation, and experimental design.

Antimicrobial resistance among refugees and asylum seekers: a global systematic review and meta-analysis.

Refugees and asylum seekers might have an increased risk of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) carriage or infection due to several factors, with conflict and war known to accelerate the spread of AMR. However, data are scarce on prevalence and risk factors for AMR among refugees and asylum seekers and how they are affected globally; in addition, how their risk compares to that of the host-country population is unclear. We aimed to explore and assess global AMR data among refugees and asylum seekers.

Adopting prospective antimicrobial stewardship (AMS) practice in high-risk immunosuppressed groups: an urgent call to action in the era of antimicrobial resistance (AMR).

SEEG4D: a tool for 4D visualization of stereoelectroencephalography data.

Epilepsy is a prevalent and serious neurological condition which impacts millions of people worldwide. Stereoelectroencephalography (sEEG) is used in cases of drug resistant epilepsy to aid in surgical resection planning due to its high spatial resolution and ability to visualize seizure onset zones. For accurate localization of the seizure focus, sEEG studies combine pre-implantation magnetic resonance imaging, post-implant computed tomography to visualize electrodes, and temporally recorded sEEG electrophysiological data.

Accelerated differentiation of neo-W nuclear-encoded mitochondrial genes between two climate-associated bird lineages signals potential co-evolution with mitogenomes.

There is considerable evidence for mitochondrial-nuclear co-adaptation as a key evolutionary driver. Hypotheses regarding the roles of sex-linkage have emphasized Z-linked nuclear genes with mitochondrial function (N-mt genes), whereas it remains contentious whether the perfect co-inheritance of W genes with mitogenomes could hinder or facilitate co-adaptation. Young (neo-) sex chromosomes that possess relatively many N-mt genes compared to older chromosomes provide unprecedented hypothesis-testing opportunities.

With the emergence of the COVID-19 pandemic, the absence of established evidence-based treatment protocols led healthcare professionals and the public to explore experimental treatments, including high doses of vitamin D supplements. This study aimed to assess changes in serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D levels during the pandemic, employing a retrospective cohort analysis of data from Charleston Area Medical Center (CAMC). The study analyzed serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D levels in a cohort of 35,556 patients treated at CAMC in 2019, a representative pre-pandemic period, to 2021, a representative pandemic period.

Background: Digital dementia risk reduction interventions are cost-effective and scalable. However, it is unknown how they are perceived by people already experiencing cognitive concerns or decline.

Objective: To understand the current use, interest, and preferences for online learning courses and interest in learning about factors influencing brain health and dementia risk among adults ≥45.

Antimicrobial stewardship markers and healthcare-associated pneumonia threshold criteria in UK hospitals: analysis of the MicroGuide application.

Background: To address antimicrobial resistance, antimicrobial stewardship (AMS) principles must be implemented and adhered to. Clinical decision aids such as the MicroGuide app are an important part of these efforts. We sought to evaluate the consistency of core AMS information and the diversity of classification thresholds for healthcare-associated pneumonia (HAP) in the MicroGuide app.

Knowledge and Instance Mapping: architecture for premeditated interoperability of disparate data for materials.

Predicting and elucidating the impacts of materials on human health and the environment is an unending task that has taken on special significance in the context of nanomaterials research over the last two decades. The properties of materials in environmental and physiological media are dynamic, reflecting the complex interactions between materials and these media. This dynamic behavior requires special consideration in the design of databases and data curation that allow for subsequent comparability and interrogation of the data from potentially diverse sources.

MyCOACH (COnnected Advice for Cognitive Health): a digitally delivered multidomain intervention for cognitive decline and risk of dementia in adults with mild cognitive impairment or subjective cognitive decline-study protocol for a randomised controlled trial.

Introduction: Digital health interventions are cost-effective and easily accessible, but there is currently a lack of effective online options for dementia prevention especially for people at risk due to mild cognitive impairment (MCI) or subjective cognitive decline (SCD).

Methods And Analysis: MyCOACH (COnnected Advice for Cognitive Health) is a tailored online dementia risk reduction programme for adults aged ≥65 living with MCI or SCD. The MyCOACH trial aims to evaluate the programme's effectiveness in reducing dementia risk compared with an active control over a 64-week period (N=326).

Surgeon Information-Sharing, Parent Verbal Engagement, and Parent Knowledge of Pediatric Adenotonsillectomy.

Objective: We characterize clinician information-sharing and parent verbal engagement during pediatric adenotonsillectomy consultations and evaluate whether these behaviors relate to disease-specific knowledge for parents of children with obstructive sleep-disordered breathing (OSDB).

Easy-to-use R functions to separate reduced-representation genomic datasets into sex-linked and autosomal loci, and conduct sex assignment.

Identifying sex-linked markers in genomic datasets is important because their presence in supposedly neutral autosomal datasets can result in incorrect estimates of genetic diversity, population structure and parentage. However, detecting sex-linked loci can be challenging, and available scripts neglect some categories of sex-linked variation. Here, we present new R functions to (1) identify and separate sex-linked loci in ZW and XY sex determination systems and (2) infer the genetic sex of individuals based on these loci.

Racial equity in trauma injury: An unresolved enigma.

Background: Racial disparities in healthcare have been attributed to socioeconomic inequalities while the relative risk (RR) of traumatic injury in people of color has yet to be described.

Methods: Demographics of our patient population were compared to the population of our service area. The racial and ethnic identities of gunshot wound (GSW) and motor vehicle collision (MVC) patients were used to establish RR of traumatic injury adjusting for socioeconomic status defined by payor mix and geography.

Automated Prediction of Infant Cognitive Development Risk by Video: A Pilot Study.

Objective: Cognition is an essential human function, and its development in infancy is crucial. Prospective validation and application of the Trauma-Specific Frailty Index: Results of an American Association for the Surgery of Trauma multi-institutional observational trial.

Background: The frailty index is a known predictor of adverse outcomes in geriatric patients. Trauma-Specific Frailty Index (TSFI) was created and validated at a single center to accurately identify frailty and reliably predict worse outcomes among geriatric trauma patients. This study aims to prospectively validate the TSFI in a multi-institutional cohort of geriatric trauma patients.

An evaluation of a New Zealand "vape to quit smoking" programme.

Aim: To compare the use of smoking cessation aids across different ethnic groups and age groups within a large New Zealand cohort and to assess the uptake and effectiveness of e-cigarettes for smoking cessation via a "vape to quit" initiative.

Methods: Retrospective analysis of Te Hā - Waitaha smoking cessation service, including a telephone interview of a subgroup, who opted into the "vape to quit" programme. The uptake of different smoking cessation aids, including the use of medications and other products, was evaluated and the self-reported quit rate in a "vape to quit" cohort was evaluated.

The Effect of Ivermectin on Cases of COVID-19.

Ivermectin is an antiviral agent that has historically had a wide variety of uses. Recently, it has gained popularity in the mainstream media for use in treating and preventing COVID-19 infection, prompting high sales in veterinary grade Ivermectin. Studies are increasingly looking at Ivermectin as a possible agent for prevention and treatment of COVID-19, however further information is needed to assess efficacy and safety.

Learning Environments and Evidence-Based Practices in Bioengineering and Biomedical Engineering.

This paper provides a synopsis of discussions related to the Learning Environments track of the Fourth BME Education Summit held at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio in May 2019. This summit was organized by the Council of Chairs of Bioengineering and Biomedical Engineering, and participants included over 300 faculty members from 100+ accredited undergraduate programs. The Learning Environments track had six interactive workshops that provided facilitated discussion and provide recommendations in the areas of: (1) Authentic project/problem identification in clinical, industrial, and global settings, (2) Experiential problem/project-based learning within courses, (3) Experiential learning in co-curricular learning settings, (4) Team-based learning, (5) Teaching to reach a diverse classroom, and (6) innovative platforms and pedagogy.
