Ferns belong to species-rich group of land plants, encompassing more than 11,000 extant species, and are crucial for reflecting terrestrial ecosystem changes. However, our understanding of their biodiversity hotspots, particularly in Southeast Asia, remains limited due to scarce genetic data. Despite harboring around one-third of the world's fern species, less than 6% of Southeast Asian ferns have been DNA-sequenced.

The efficacy of adjuvant denosumab in combination with hormonotherapy in breast cancer patients was investigated in two randomized trials, ABCSG-18 and D-Care, but the results were mixed with respect to the impact of this drug on disease-free survival. However, the ABCSG-18 study has achieved its primary goal: prevention of clinical fractures. Therefore, the protective role of Denosumab on bone fragility induced by estrogen deprivation, already demonstrated in post-menopausal women, has been validated in the breast cancer setting.

Purpose: The impact of dietary counseling on body composition in early breast cancer patients (EBC) treated with aromatase inhibitors (AIs) is uncertain. The aim of this study was to assess the effects of a diet counseling program on weight, BMI, total and regional body composition in patients treated with AIs.

Methods: This observational study involved 194 EBC patients, of which 97 attended a 6-month personalized counseling program, based on Mediterranean diet principles (cohort A) and 97 did not (cohort B).

  • Regorafenib is an oral medication used to treat certain types of tumors, including metastatic gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GIST), and is typically considered after other treatments fail.
  • In a case involving a 58-year-old woman, regorafenib was linked to increased levels of red blood cells and hemoglobin, which is not a commonly reported side effect of this drug.
  • The case suggests that the observed increase in red blood cell counts may not be related to dosage but could indicate the drug's effectiveness, highlighting the need for monitoring blood levels in patients on regorafenib.

The cool temperate origin of gymnosperm species in East Asia is specifically diverse and widespread. Certain lineages have managed to extend their distribution further south to subtropical and tropical islands such as Taiwan and the Philippines. To address questions including whether these insular lineages, recently identified as , have become genetically distinct from each other and from their continental relatives, and when and how they colonized their residing islands, we sampled over 11 populations, covering 179 individuals from Taiwan and the Philippines.

The search for solutions to the vagaries of aging has, historically, been akin to searching at night in the bright light under street lamps by utilizing the few preexisting and well-established animal model systems. Throughout my career as a comparative biologist, I have ventured into the darkness across 4 continents and studied over 150 different animal species, many of which have evolved remarkable adaptations to survive on the harsh and rugged fitness landscape that exists outside of the laboratory setting. In this Fellows Forum, I will discuss the main focus of my research for the last 25 years and dig deeply into the biology of the preternaturally long-lived naked mole-rat that makes it an ideal model system for the characterization of successful strategies to combat aging.

  • Neuroendocrine neoplasms (NENs) are rare tumors, and existing databases like SEER are outdated due to recent advancements in diagnostics and treatments, prompting the need for updated information.
  • In 2019, the Italian Association for Neuroendocrine Tumors (Itanet) launched a nationwide database to collect data on gastroenteropancreatic NENs from 37 Italian centers, focusing on details like age, diagnostics, tumor stage, and treatments.
  • By October 2023, the database has recorded data from 1,600 patients, with plans to reach 3,600 by the end of 2025, aiming to improve understanding of GEP-NENs and enhance patient

Background: Well-differentiated (WD) neuroendocrine tumors (NETs) are a group of rare neoplasms with limited therapeutic options. Cabozantinib is an inhibitor of multiple tyrosine kinases with a pivotal role in NET pathogenesis, including c-MET and Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor Receptor 2 (VEGFR2). LOLA is the first prospective phase II trial aiming to assess the safety and activity of cabozantinib combined with lanreotide in WD NETs of gastroenteropancreatic (GEP), thoracic and of unknown origin.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to understand how lifestyle changes and medical factors can help early breast cancer patients avoid weight gain during and after chemotherapy.
  • Researchers assessed diet and physical activity using questionnaires and followed patients' adherence to the Mediterranean diet, analyzing their weight changes over time.
  • Results showed that nearly 58% of participants maintained stable weight, while those who followed dietary advice experienced less weight gain, indicating that Mediterranean diet principles help prevent weight gain in normal weight women and support weight loss in those who are overweight or obese.

Naked mole-rats () are very unusual among subterranean mammals in that they live in large colonies and are extremely social, spending large amounts of time gathered together in underground nests more than a meter below the surface. Many respiring individuals resting in deep, poorly ventilated nests deplete the oxygen supply and increase the concentration of carbon dioxide. Consistent with living in that atmosphere, naked mole-rats tolerate levels of low oxygen and high carbon dioxide that are deadly to most surface-dwelling mammals.

Background: Triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) is an aggressive cancer subtype, owing to its high metastatic potential: Patients who develop brain metastases (BMs) have a poor prognosis due to the lack of effective systemic treatments. Surgery and radiation therapy are valid options, while pharmacotherapy still relies on systemic chemotherapy, which has limited efficacy. Among the new treatment strategies available, the antibody-drug conjugate (ADC) sacituzumab govitecan has shown an encouraging activity in metastatic TNBC, even in the presence of BMs.

Background: Immune-related adverse events (irAEs) are frequently reported during immune checkpoint inhibitor (ICI) therapy and are associated with long-term outcomes. It is unknown if the irAE occurrence is a valid surrogate of ICIs' efficacy.

Methods: We identified articles reporting the results of randomized trials of experimental ICI therapy in solid tumors with a systematic search.

Introduction: Whether adjuvant therapy with aromatase inhibitors (AIs) causes sleep disturbances or not in postmenopausal women with early breast cancer (EBC) is still a controversial issue.

Methods: Between March 2014 and November 2017, validated questionnaires for assessing insomnia, anxiety, depression, quality of life (QoL) and restless legs syndrome (RLS) were administered to 160 EBC patients at baseline and after 3, 6, 12, and 24 months of AI therapy.

Results: AI therapy significantly decreased the patients' QoL, but did not influence insomnia, anxiety or depression.

Background/aim: Chemotherapy-induced taste alterations (TAs) affect approximately 53-84% of breast cancer patients with significant consequences on flavor perception, possibly leading to food aversion and changes in daily dietary habits. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between TAs and changes in food habits and body weight among early breast cancer (EBC) patients undergoing adjuvant chemotherapy.

Patients And Methods: TAs were prospectively evaluated in 182 EBC patients from April 2014 to June 2018.

Purpose: Dysgeusia and taste alterations (TAs) are side effects of cytotoxic chemotherapy and affect patients' quality of life; however, the prevalence, types, and duration of TAs and their potential relationship with other clinical disturbances are not well-described. Our primary aim was to prospectively evaluate the characteristics of TAs in early breast cancer (EBC) patients during (neo)adjuvant chemotherapy and up to 1 year after its completion.

Methods: From April 2014 to June 2018, 182 EBC patients entered the study and received (neo)adjuvant chemotherapy, mostly with taxane and anthracycline-containing regimens (65% of cases).
