Interstitial lung disease (ILD) is a hallmark of systemic sclerosis (SSc). Although high-resolution computed tomography (HRCT) is the gold standard to diagnose ILD, recently lung ultrasound (LUS) has emerged in SSc patients as a new promising technique for the ILD evaluation, noninvasive and radiation-free. The aim of this study was to evaluate if there is a correlation between LUS, chest HRCT, pulmonary function tests findings and clinical variables of the disease.

There are many evidences that the HLA genes are risk factors for kidney complex disease for the pathogenesis of which an abnormal response of the immune system is involved. In this review, we present the latest knowledge about the genetics of the HLA complex, the molecules encoded by the HLA genes, their polymorphism and the physiological role of the HLA system in the defense against infections. It then addresses the issue of the association between specific alleles of HLA and renal disorders.

The COMPASS Collaboration at CERN has measured diffractive dissociation of 190  GeV/c pions into the π(-)π(-)π(+) final state using a stationary hydrogen target. A partial-wave analysis (PWA) was performed in bins of 3π mass and four-momentum transfer using the isobar model and the so far largest PWA model consisting of 88 waves. A narrow peak is observed in the f0(980)π channel with spin, parity and C-parity quantum numbers J(PC)=1(++).

Palliative care (PC), introduced early in the management of chronic illness, improves patient outcomes. Early integration of a palliative approach for persons with HIV has been documented to be effective in identifying and managing patient-level concerns over the past decade in African settings. The experience of implementing PC in multiple African and other resource-constrained settings (RCSs) emphasizes the need for essential palliative competencies that can be integrated with chronic disease management for patients and their families facing life-limiting illness.

Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) is the fourth cause of cancer-induced death in the Western World. In PDAC patients, alpha-enolase (ENOA), a glycolytic enzyme that also acts as plasminogen receptor, is up-regulated and elicits the production of autoantibodies. Our previous studies revealed that most PDAC patients specifically produce antibodies to Serine(419)phosphorylated ENOA (Ser(419)P-ENOA) isoforms (ENOA1,2), and that this humoral response correlates with a better clinical outcome.

The straightforward synthesis of 5'-methylene-[1,4]-triazole-substituted aminoribosyl uridines is described. Two families of compounds were synthesized from a unique epoxide which was regioselectively opened by acetylide ions (for compounds II) or azide ions (for compounds III). Sequential diastereoselective glycosylation with a ribosyl fluoride derivative, Cu(i)-catalyzed azide-alkyne cycloaddition (CuAAC) with various complementary azide and alkyne partners afforded the targeted compounds after final deprotection.

Release of conserved cytoplasmic proteins is widely spread among Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. Because these proteins display additional functions when located at the bacterial surface, they have been qualified as moonlighting proteins. The GAPDH is a glycolytic enzyme which plays an important role in the virulence processes of pathogenic microorganisms like bacterial invasion and host immune system modulation.

Food allergy (FA) is a major health issue for children living in Western countries. At this time the only proven treatment for FA is elimination of offender antigen from the diet. It is becoming clear that the development of gut microbiota exerts a profound influence on immune system maturation and tolerance acquisition.

Mycobacterial spindle cell pseudotumor (MSP) represents a rare, non-malignant, mass-forming reaction to various mycobacterial infections, typically occurring in immunocompromised patients. It is characterized by the proliferation of spindle-shaped fibrohistiocytic cells without the formation of epithelioid granulomas. Without staining for acid-fast bacilli, histological distinction from other spindle cell lesions, including malignancy, can be difficult.

Background: Oxygen desaturation and reoxygenation, related to intermittent hypoxia cycles due to upper airway obstruction, are major pathophysiologic features of obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) and are thought to be responsible for an increased risk of cardiovascular diseases. Continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) is therefore considered the gold standard in the management of OSAS. Further data demonstrated a high prevalence of OSAS in patients with altered renal function despite the underlying pathophysiological mechanisms that have not been clarified.
