Vanadium redox flow batteries (VRFBs) are of considerable importance in large-scale energy storage systems due to their high efficiency, long cycle life and easy scalability. In this work, chemical vapor deposition (CVD) grown carbon nanotubes (CNTs)-modified electrodes and Nafion 117 membrane are utilised for formulating a vanadium redox flow battery (VRFB). In a CVD chamber, the growth of CNTs is carried out on an acid-treated graphite felt surface.

Article Synopsis
  • In an all-vanadium redox flow battery (VRFB), the performance is significantly influenced by the characteristics of graphite felts used for the electrodes, as redox reactions occur on their surfaces.
  • *Atmospheric pressure plasma jets (APPJs) were utilized for modifying the surface of graphite felts to enhance their electrochemical properties, but the optimal plasma conditions regarding temperature and reactivity were previously untested.
  • *Research results showed that APPJ treatments led to a higher percentage of O-/N-containing functional groups on the graphite felt surfaces and improved performance metrics, with an optimal treatment temperature of 550 °C yielding an energy efficiency of 83.5% compared to 72.0% for sulfuric acid treatment.

Due to the increasing trend of using renewable energy, the development of an energy storage system (ESS) attracts great research interest. A zinc-air battery (ZAB) is a promising ESS due to its high capacity, low cost and high potential to support circular economy principles. However, despite ZABs' technological advancements, a generic dynamic model for a ZAB, which is a key component for effective battery management and monitoring, is still lacking.

A proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) system for the application of unmanned aerial vehicles is equipped without humidifiers and the cathode channels of the stack are open to the environment due to limited weight available for power sources. As a result, the PEMFC is operated under low humidity conditions, causing membrane dehydration, low performance, and degradation. To keep the generated water within the fuel cell to humidify the membrane, in this study, polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) is employed in the fabrication of membrane electrode assemblies (MEAs).

Zinc-air batteries are a promising technology for large-scale electricity storage. However, their practical deployment has been hindered by some issues related to corrosion and passivation of the zinc anode in an alkaline electrolyte. In this work, anionic surfactant sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) and nonionic surfactant Pluronic F-127 (P127) are examined their applicability to enhance the battery performances.
