Background: Neonatal lupus erythematosus is a rare multisystem autoimmune disorder that predominantly involves the heart with congenital heart block but can involve other organs including the liver. The disease results from passage of maternal autoantibodies to the fetus and manifests in various forms depending on the organ involved. Neonatal lupus liver disease manifestations range from benign elevation in aminotransferases to fatal hepatic insufficiency with iron deposition that does not respond to therapy.
