Digital health technology tools (DHTTs) present real opportunities for accelerating innovation, improving patient care, reducing clinical trial duration and minimising risk in medicines development. This review is comprised of four case studies of DHTTs used throughout the lifecycle of medicinal products, starting from their development. These cases illustrate how the regulatory requirements of DHTTs used in medicines development are based on two European regulatory frameworks (medical device and the medicinal product regulations) and highlight the need for increased collaboration between various stakeholders, including regulators (medicines regulators and device bodies), pharmaceutical sponsors, manufacturers of devices and software, and academia.

Drying-off practices to reduce milk production before dry-off are gaining attention because high milk yields at dry-off are becoming more common and increase the risk to cow health and welfare during the dry period. Incomplete milking for the last days before dry-off is one approach for reducing milk production. We conducted an online survey to determine the currently used drying-off practices on Swiss dairy farms and to identify the adoption potential of integrating incomplete milking before dry-off.

In 2020, the first COVID-19 lockdowns resulted in food panic buying and excessive food stockpiling across many countries around the world. Many governments recommend keeping emergency food stocks for three to ten days for times of potential shortages in food supply. Based on data from an online survey conducted among Swiss inhabitants, we investigated the effect of knowledge level and stockpiling behaviour according to governmental stockpiling recommendations in normal times on the decision to build up more food stocks than usual during the first lockdown in 2020.

Long-term datasets documenting the evolution of coastal forms and processes, through the provision of recurring beach as well as shoreface morphological observations and accompanying time-series of environmental controls, remain difficult to collect and are rarely made available. However, they are increasingly needed to further our understanding of coastal change and to improve the models that will help planning what our future coast will be. This data descriptor presents the results of topographic and bathymetric surveys at Porsmilin, a macrotidal embayed beach situated in Brittany, northwest France.

In the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic, personal hygiene behaviours such as proper handwashing have gained significantly more attention and interpersonal contact is performed with great care. Disgust, as a disease-avoidance mechanism, can play an important role in the promotion of hygiene behaviour. We know from previous research that pathogen disgust can be a predictor of an individual's behaviour in the pandemic.

Background: Cancer immunotherapy (CIT), as a monotherapy or in combination with chemotherapy, has been shown to extend overall survival in patients with locally advanced or metastatic non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). However, patients experience treatment-related symptoms that they are required to recall between hospital visits. Digital patient monitoring and management (DPMM) tools may improve clinical practice by allowing real-time symptom reporting.

Aims: Studies in various cancer types have demonstrated discordance between results from different programmed death-ligand 1 (PD-L1) assays. Here, we compare the reproducibility and analytical concordance of four clinically developed assays for assessing PD-L1-positivity in tumour-infiltrating immune cells in the tumour area (PD-L1-IC-positivity) in triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC).

Methods And Results: Primary TNBC resection specimens (n = 30) were selected based on their PD-L1-IC-positivity per VENTANA SP142 (<1%: 15 cases; 1-5%: seven cases; >5%: eight cases).

Background: Previous studies have suggested increased clinical benefit with inhibition of programmed death-ligand 1 (PD-L1)/programmed death-1 in patients with PD-L1-positive locally advanced/metastatic renal cell carcinoma (RCC). We examined the analytical and inter-observer comparability of PD-L1-positivity across 4 clinically developed immunohistochemistry assays in clear-cell RCC (CCRCC).

Materials And Methods: Randomly selected archived, formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded nephrectomy specimens from 201 patients with locally advanced CCRCC were screened using VENTANA SP142.

Background: The German NIU HER2 model was developed based on five variables found to have statistically significant influences on HER2-positivity, to allow exploration of deviations between model-predicted and actual HER2-positivity rates as a measure of testing quality. The prospective, non-interventional EPI HER2 BC study (NCT02666261) compared NIU and EPI data, aiming to validate the NIU model.

Methods: HER2 status and patient-/tumour-related information were collected from eligible patients with invasive breast cancer.

The cross-cultural testing of scales represents an important step in the scale validation process. The present study evaluated whether the eight-item short version of the recently developed Food Disgust Scale (FDS-short) is a reliable and valid tool for measuring food disgust sensitivity in ten countries: Australia, China, England, France, Germany, Mexico, South Africa, Spain, Sweden, and the USA. In an online survey, the participants (N = 6128) answered items from the FDS-short and other scales related to (food) disgust sensitivity so as to test the construct and criterion validity of the FDS-short.

Programmed death-ligand 1 (PD-L1) expression on tumor cells (TC) or tumor-infiltrating immune cells (IC) correlated in several studies with PD-L1/programmed death-1 (PD-1) checkpoint inhibitor efficacy. Since June 2018, a positive PD-L1 status is required for atezolizumab or pembrolizumab treatment of patients with advanced or metastasized urothelial bladder cancer, who are ineligible for cisplatin-containing therapy. We examined technical comparability and inter-reader agreement of four clinically developed PD-L1 assays in locally advanced disease.

Adsorption heat pumps offer a clean, zero-emission technology for universally applicable cooling or heating utilizing water as a refrigerant and waste or renewable heat as driving energy instead of electricity. Despite their attractive environmentally friendly prospects, the broader application of such classes of heat pumps has not yet been possible, mainly because of the low power density of adsorption heat exchangers and the corresponding large size and high cost of the adsorption heat pumps. We report an inexpensive route for the fabrication of zeolite coatings with high adsorption power density based on the bottom-up assembly of colloids directed by magnetic and capillary forces.

Despite >10 years of routine human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2) testing in breast cancer, testing quality is still an issue. Guidelines recommend assessing HER2 positivity rates as a quality indicator; however, the extent to which patient- or tumor-related factors influence HER2 positivity is still unknown. The present study analyzed these influences to identify pathology centers with HER2 positivity rates unexplained by patient- or tumor-related factors.

Management of fluid overload in patients with end-stage renal disease represents a unique challenge to clinical practice because of the lack of accurate and objective measurement methods. Currently, peripheral edema is subjectively assessed by palpation of the patient's extremities, ostensibly a qualitative indication of tissue viscoelastic properties. New robust quantitative estimates of tissue fluid content would allow clinicians to better guide treatment, minimizing reactive treatment decision making.

We discuss the calculation of crystal-field splittings using Wannier functions and show how contributions to the crystal-field splitting that are due to hybridization with different ligand states can be separated from the bare Coulomb contribution by constructing sets of Wannier functions incorporating different levels of hybridization. We demonstrate this method using SrVO3 as a generic example of a transition metal oxide. We then calculate trends in the crystal-field splitting for two series of hypothetical tetragonally distorted perovskite oxides and discuss the relation between the calculated 'electrostatic' contribution to the crystal field and the simple point charge model.
