Background: Hyperuricemia is associated with several metabolic and cardiovascular disorders, and traditional treatments, such as xanthine oxidase (XO) inhibitors, often have limitations, such as severe hypersensitivity reactions or ineffectiveness in achieving target serum urate levels in some patients. Quercetin, a naturally occurring flavonoid, has shown potential as a hypouricemic agent through XO inhibition.

Objective: This study aims to evaluate the potential hypouricemic effect of Quercetin Phytosome™ (QP) supplementation across three cohort studies involving healthy adults with various metabolic health profiles, exploring its potential as a safe, effective intervention for hyperuricemia.

Background: The presented study aimed to evaluate the effect of aging on the quality attributes of ODTs.

Experimental: ODTs prepared in one of our previous studies, packed in standard blister packing, were stored at ambient conditions in a laboratory (protected from direct sunlight) for 5 years and evaluated for their quality attributes, including physical parameters, mechanical strength (crushing strength, specific crushing strength, tensile strength, and friability), disintegration behavior ( disintegration time, oral disintegration time, and wetting time), assay and dissolution rates. Drug content of all the samples was determined by HPLC.

Equine influenza (EI) is a highly contagious acute respiratory disease of wild and domesticated horses, donkeys, mules, and other Equidae. EI is caused by the Equine Influenza virus (EIV), is endemic in many countries and outbreaks still have a severe impact on the equine industry globally. Conventional EI vaccines are widely used, but a need exists for a platform that facilitates prompt manufacturing of a highly immunogenic, antigenically matched, updated vaccine product.

The use of granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (GCSF) to control febrile neutropenia (FN) caused by anti-cancer chemotherapy is well documented but it still needs to evaluated with respect to the specific type of cancer and chemotherapeutic agents. The present study evaluates the efficacy of adjunctive GCSF for treating FN after taking anticancer therapy by measuring clinical, hematological and microbiological outcomes. It is a single center study conducted at Hayatabad Medical Complex (HMC), Peshawar, Pakistan.

Article Synopsis
  • Evidence-based screening is essential for detecting myocardial ischemia in high-risk diabetics, particularly by analyzing nitric oxide levels, lipid profiles, and atherogenic indices in those with coronary artery disease (CAD).
  • A study involved 50 diabetics with CAD, 30 without CAD, and 23 healthy individuals, measuring various biochemical parameters and plasma nitric oxide through the Griess reaction.
  • Results indicated that diabetics with CAD had elevated levels of nitric oxide and triglycerides, whereas their cholesterol levels were lower, and there was a significant positive correlation between nitric oxide and glycated hemoglobin, highlighting the link between chronic hyperglycemia and potential vascular complications in diabetes.

Background And Aim: Endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) is commonly used to diagnose and treat bile duct and pancreatic disorders. Successful cannulation of the papilla is crucial for the effectiveness of ERCP; however, sometimes, it can be challenging to achieve. This study explores the relationship between net difficult ERCP cannulation with bile visibility, papilla orifice visibility, and papilla position and compares it with successful cannulation.

Depression is a pervasive mood disorder that continues to challenge researchers and clinicians worldwide. Caffeine and its derivatives have been studied for their neuroprotective and antidepressant effect. Current study aimed to explore the potential antidepressant effect of a caffeine derivative, Sy-2476 [4-(1, 3, 7-trimethyl-2, 6-dioxo-2, 3, 6, 7-tetrahydro-1H-purin-8-yl) benzo nitrile], in corticosterone-induced rat model of depression.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study focused on anemia management in chronic kidney disease (CKD) patients in Pakistan, highlighting that 78.7% of CKD and 94.7% of dialysis patients experienced anemia, which significantly affects their quality of life (QoL).
  • - A total of 170 patients participated, showing that while dialysis patients had higher usage of erythropoietin stimulating agents (ESAs), both groups faced a substantial treatment burden, which was linked to age, disease duration, and comorbidity.
  • - The results indicated that many patients didn’t reach target hemoglobin levels after six months, suggesting inadequate management of anemia and illustrating a negative relationship between treatment burden and QoL for those undergoing dialysis.

Background: Recent reports have revealed that nephropathy leading to kidney injury (KI) is a prevalent complication of COVID-19 and is linked to high mortality and morbidity in diabetes mellitus type II (DM-T-II) patients. This systematic literature review and meta-analysis aimed to critically analyze existing studies and evidence on the impact of COVID-19 on nephropathy and kidney injury in diabetes mellitus type II (DM-T-II) patients.

Method: A systematic search was conducted in the Web of Science (WoS), PubMed and Cochrane databases for relevant studies published between March 2020 and July 2023.

The basic purpose of this work was to develop environmentally friendly, biodegradable, and biocompatible polymeric nanoparticles of sorafenib that can effectively release the desired drug in a customized and controlled manner for targeting hepatocellular carcinoma. The solvent evaporation technique was employed for the synthesis of sorafenib-loaded PLGA-chitosan nanoparticles, followed by various experimental specifications and compatibility studies using poloxamer 407 as the stabilizer. The best nanoparticles thus synthesized were selected to be used for cytotoxicity investigations through and assessments.
