Article Synopsis
  • Fecal incontinence (FI) involves unpredictable bowel symptoms, and the reliability of patients' memory about these symptoms is questioned.
  • The study aimed to compare patients' recollections of their bowel symptoms with actual data recorded in a stool diary over one week.
  • Findings showed poor agreement between recalled symptoms and diary records, indicating that patients often underestimate or overestimate their FI episodes and other bowel symptoms, suggesting recall bias is significant.

The ongoing pandemic resulting from severe acute respiratory syndrome-caused by coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2)-has posed a multitude of healthcare challenges of unprecedented proportions. Intestinal enterocytes have the highest expression of angiotensin-converting enzyme-2 (ACE2), which functions as the key receptor for SARS-CoV-2 entry into cells. As such, particular interest has been accorded to SARS-CoV-2 and how it manifests within the gastrointestinal system.

Background: Neuropathy may cause fecal incontinence and mixed fecal incontinence/constipation, but its prevalence is unclear, partly due to the lack of comprehensive testing of spino-anorectal innervation.

Objective: This study aimed to develop and determine the clinical usefulness of a novel test, translumbosacral anorectal magnetic stimulation for fecal incontinence.

Design: This observational cohort study was conducted from 2012 to 2018.

Neurofibromatosis-1 (NF-1) is an autosomal dominant condition characterized by cutaneous pigmentation and tumour formation along nerves in the brain, skin, and other organs. Gastrointestinal stromal tumours (GIST) are rare mesenchymal tumours involving the gastrointestinal tract (GI) associated with NF-1. We present a case of life-threatening GI bleeding from GIST in a patient with NF-1.
