Background: Palm olein oil (PO), obtained from refining of palm oil is rich in monounsaturated fatty acid and antioxidant vitamins and is widely used as oil in diet in many parts of the world including India. Palm oil has been reported to have beneficial effects in oxidative stress associated with hypertension and arterial thrombosis. Oxidative stress plays a major role in the etiopathology of myocardial ischemic-reperfusion injury (IRI) which is a common sequel of ischemic heart disease.

The efficacy of Withania somnifera (Ws) to limit myocardial injury after ischemia and reperfusion was explored and compared to that of Vit E, a reference standard known to reduce mortality and infarct size due to myocardial infarction. Wistar rats (150-200 g) were divided into six groups and received orally saline (sham, control group), Ws-50/kg (Ws control and treated group) and Vit E-100 mg/kg (Vit E control and treated group) respectively for 1 month. On the 31st day, rats of the control, Vit E and Ws treated groups were anesthetized and subjected to 45 min occlusion of the LAD coronary artery followed by 60 min reperfusion.

The present study was designed to evaluate the cardioprotective potential of hydro-alcoholic extract of Withania somnifera on the basis of haemodynamic, histopathological and biochemical parameters in the isoprenaline-(isoproterenol) induced myocardial necrosis in rats and to compare with Vitamin E, a known cardioprotective antioxidant. Wistar albino male rats (150-200 g) were divided into six main groups: sham, isoprenaline control, Withania somnifera/Vitamin E control and Withania somnifera/Vitamin E treatment groups. Withania somnifera was administered at doses 25, 50 and 100 mg/kg and Vitamin E at a dose of 100 mg/kg, orally for 4 weeks.

The distinction of early stages of mycosis fungoides from benign lymphoid disorders of skin is difficult by conventional histological techniques. We studied 10 cases of mycosis fungoides, 10 cases of large plaque parapsoriasis, 10 cases of other benign lymphoid disorders of skin and 5 cases of lymph nodes. Nuclear area, perimeter of the nucleus, nuclear contour index, cytoplasmic area, form factor and nuclear cytoplasmic ratio as well as DNA-ploidy were determined by image analysis.

Background: Oxidative stress is the major etiopathological factor in adriamycin-induced cardiotoxicity. Relatively low amounts of endogenous antioxidant makes the heart vulnerable to oxidative stress-induced damage. Chronic oral administration of garlic has been reported to enhance the endogenous antioxidants of heart.

Background: Prostate cancer (PCa) incidences vary with genetic, geographical and ethnic dietary background of patients while angiogenesis is modulated through exquisite interplay of tumor-stromal interactions of biological macromolecules. We hypothesized that comprehensive analysis of four biomarkers modulating angiogenesis in PCa progression in two diverse populations might explain the variance in the incidence rates.

Results: Immunohistochemical analysis of 42 PCa biopsies reveals that though Anx-II expression is lost in both the Indian and American population with Gleason scores (GS) ranging between 6 and 10, up to 25 % of cells in the entire high grade (GS > 8) PD PCa samples from US show intense focal membrane staining for Anx-II unlike similarly graded specimens from India.

Interpenetrating network hydrogels (IPNs) based on poly(acrylic acid) and gelatin (Ge) were evaluated for in vitro and in vivo biodegradation and in vivo release of gentamicin sulphate. In vitro and in vivo degradation studies demonstrated that with the increase of acrylic acid content in the polymer, the rate of degradation decreases, and a reverse phenomenon was observed with increasing Ge content in the hydrogel. The rate of in vivo degradation was much lower than in vitro degradation.

Focal segmental glomerulosclerosis (FSGS) and Alport syndrome (AS) are two major causes of end-stage renal disease (ESRD). A few families with autosomal dominant FSGS have been reported with linkage to chromosome 19q13 or 11q22, while AS is usually linked to mutations in type IV collagen (COL4) subunit genes. A phenotype resembling AS may also be seen with myosin heavy chain-9 (MYH9) gene mutations.

We prospectively examined the effect of treatment with intravenous cyclophosphamide in patients with steroid-resistant nephrotic syndrome. Twenty-four patients (minimal change disease in 11, focal segmental glomerulosclerosis in 9, and mesangioproliferative glomerulonephritis in 4), who did not show remission of proteinuria despite treatment with 8 weeks of oral prednisolone and six intravenous pulses of dexamethasone, were studied. Cyclophosphamide was administered intravenously, at a dose of 750 mg/m(2) once a month for 6 months; therapy with alternate-day prednisolone was continued.
