This study investigates the feasibility of a dry electrode cap design for neonatal electroencephalogram (EEG) recordings. Recordings on a phantom and a real infant are compared between a novel dry electrode cap and a clinically used gel-based electrode cap. The phantom recordings included measuring both the electrode contact force and the signal quality during still and respiration-like head motion.

Objective: Electroencephalography (EEG) is widely used for assessing infant's brain activity, and multi-channel recordings support studies on functional cortical networks. Here, we aimed to assess how the number of recording electrodes affects the quality and level of details accessible in studying infant's cortical networks.

Methods: Dense array EEG recordings with 124 channels from N=20 infants were used as the reference, and lower electrode numbers were subsampled to simulate recording setups with 63, 31, and 19 electrodes, respectively.

Long-term EEG monitoring in neonatal intensive care units (NICU) is challenged with finding solutions for setting up and maintaining a sufficient recording quality with limited technical experience. The current study evaluates different solutions for the skin-electrode interface and develops a disposable EEG cap for newborn infants. Several alternative materials for the skin-electrode interface were compared to the conventional gel and paste: conductive textiles (textured and woven), conductive Velcro, sponge, super absorbent hydrogel (SAH), and hydro fiber sheets (HF).
