Aims: Cardiovascular diseases (CVD) are a leading cause of mortality and morbidity in the North Africa and Middle East (NAME) region. Due to the paucity of research on this issue, we aimed to estimate the burden of CVD and its attributable risk factors in the NAME region.

Methods And Results: Data from the Global Burden of Disease (GBD) were retrieved to estimate the incidence, prevalence, deaths, years of life lost, years lived with disability, disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) for CVD across 21 countries and both sexes.

Article Synopsis
  • * A study from 1990 to 2019 revealed around 339,000 patients with AF/AFL in Iran, with 30,200 new cases and significant disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) lost, largely due to high blood pressure and body mass index.
  • * Projections for 2050 indicate the number of AF/AFL patients could reach 1.1 million, emphasizing the need for improved prevention strategies targeting risk factors, despite advancements in treatment.

Background: High-intensity statin therapy is currently recommended initial guideline therapy in ACS treatment. However, only a minority of patients are achieving LDL-C attainment goal at 6 months. Proprotein convertase subtilisin/kexin type 9 (PCSK9) inhibitors are on recommended guideline therapy post-ACS if LDL-C goal attainment is not achieved after high-intensity statin (4-6 weeks) and after the addition of ezetimibe if guideline goal attainment is not achieved after an additional 4-6 weeks.

Background: Although conversion arthroplasty of fused hips can relieve pain and provide patient satisfaction, long-term outcomes of total hip arthroplasty (THA) after hip fusion remain a subject of debate. This meta-analysis aimed to assess the effectiveness of THA for fused hips over a long period with concerns over potential complications.

Methods: A systematic search of five databases from 2000 until 2023 identified English studies evaluating THA for fused hips with at least 100 months of follow-up.

Background And Aims: In the pathophysiology of Guillain-Barre syndrome (GBS), inflammation and immunity are believed to play a key role. The neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), monocyte-lymphocyte ratio (MLR), and platelet-lymphocyte ratio (PLR) have been recently identified as potential markers of inflammation or immunity. This study aimed to investigate whether NLR, MLR, and PLR are associated with GBS characteristics in children.

Article Synopsis
  • Pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) affects about 1% of the global population, especially older adults, and managing it has evolved significantly with various treatment strategies.
  • Sotatercept, an FDA-approved drug, shows promise in treating PAH, but its safety and effectiveness are not well understood.
  • A recent meta-analysis found that Sotatercept improved pulmonary vascular resistance and patient functionality compared to a placebo, with similar adverse events in both groups, but it significantly increased hemoglobin levels, highlighting the need for further research on its effects on anemia in PAH patients.

Novel coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has posed a crucial hazard to global health. The new species share similarities with the two previously emerged entities: severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) and the Middle East respiratory syndrome (MERS) that have caused outbreaks in 2002 and 2012, respectively. Interestingly, all of these coronaviruses can cause potentially fatal respiratory syndromes, though behave differently in patients with cancer compared to patients without cancer.
