Children use nasogastric tubes (NGTs) to ensure optimum nutrition and medication delivery when oral feeding fails or when they experience faltering growth. Although this method is less invasive, children may experience complications associated with NGTs. There is a gap in the literature regarding the types and prevention of complications of NGTs in the pediatric population at home.

Introduction: Mild sleep-disordered breathing (mSDB) in children is associated with both neurobehavioral morbidity and reduced quality of life (QOL). However, the association between symptom burden and QOL with executive function is not well understood, and it is not known whether QOL and symptom burden may help identify children with neurocognitive dysfunction.

Objective: To assess associations among executive function, QOL, and symptom burden in children with mSDB.

Rice blast, a severe fungal disease, is a substantial threat to global food security, particularly in rice-oriented areas. The fungus is increasingly resistant and fast developing in nature. However, chemical fungicides are not only detrimental to the environment but eventually also lose their efficiency.

Background: There is a lack of large-scale studies exploring labor market marginalization (LMM) among individuals diagnosed with bipolar disorder (BD). We aimed to investigate the association of BD with subsequent LMM in Sweden, and the effect of sex on LMM in BD.

Methods: Individuals aged 19-60 years living in Sweden with a first-time BD diagnosis between 2007 and 2016 ( = 25 231) were followed from the date of diagnosis for a maximum of 14 years.

Background: Mycetoma, a neglected tropical disease endemic to Sudan, is traditionally characterized as a painless condition. However, recent studies reporting painful mycetoma lesions have challenged this assumption. With limited reports in the medical literature regarding pain in mycetoma, this study was conducted to investigate the risk factors for painful mycetoma lesions in patients visiting the Mycetoma Research Centre (MRC) in Khartoum, Sudan.

Background: Among diarrheal children, injudicious use of antibiotics is a major public health concern particularly in low- and middle-income countries. There are evidence-based guidelines by the World Health Organization (WHO) to prescribe antibiotics for bloody diarrhea in children. There is a scarcity of published data regarding the judicious use of antibiotics for bloody diarrhea in children.

Article Synopsis
  • The study focuses on children who rely on long-term mechanical ventilation (LTMV) and explores their journey toward being weaned off the ventilator, with a focus on identifying potential early predictors for successful liberation.
  • The research involved a retrospective analysis of 78 patients who started chronic ventilator support before 12 months of age and looked at various factors, including age at tracheostomy and hospital discharge.
  • The findings reveal significant variability in the age at which these children were liberated from ventilator support, suggesting that factors beyond lung disease severity play a role, indicating the need for further research into the complexities of their respiratory outcomes.

Purpose: Doxorubicin, bleomycin, vinblastine, dacarbazine (ABVD) chemotherapy is the current standard treatment for early-stage Hodgkins lymphoma (HL). The use of consolidative radiation therapy (RT) in addition to chemotherapy may lead to better survival rates but is controversial because of concerns about long-term toxicity. The aim of this study is to compare outcomes of patients receiving ABVD chemotherapy alone (CTX alone) versus ABVD with consolidative RT (CMT).

  • Central sleep apnea (CSA) in children with neurodevelopmental disorders often sees poor tolerance to conventional BiLevelPAP therapy, necessitating alternative treatments like acetazolamide, which works by inducing mild metabolic acidosis to stabilize breathing.
  • A case study of a 12-year-old boy with an FBXO28 gene-related disorder revealed that after starting acetazolamide, there were significant improvements in his CSA symptoms and quality of life, with no major side effects reported.
  • Findings suggest that acetazolamide can effectively stimulate respiratory function in pediatric CSA cases, particularly for those with genetic conditions, though more research is needed to confirm treatment protocols and long-term safety.

Background/aim: Obesity and related metabolic abnormalities in adults are associated with peripheral neuropathy. Acanthosis nigricans (AN) is associated with insulin resistance, fatty liver, hyperlipidemia and glucose intolerance, all of which are risk factors for neuropathy. The aim of this study was to investigate if obese adolescents with AN have evidence of small nerve fiber damage.

  • The enzyme Asparaginyl Endopeptidase (AEP) is linked to serious brain disorders like Alzheimer's and Frontotemporal Dementia, where it contributes to neurodegeneration through the formation of harmful protein aggregates.
  • Despite its significance in these conditions, there are currently no approved small molecule inhibitors for AEP, highlighting a critical need for new treatments.
  • Researchers used a computer-aided drug design approach to analyze over 10 million compounds, identifying six potential AEP inhibitors (AEPI-1 to AEPI-6) that show strong binding affinity and stability, making them promising candidates for drug development.

  • The study focuses on developing new sulfone analogues of known metallo-β-lactamase inhibitors (MBLis) and their antibacterial effectiveness.
  • The new compounds showed greater effectiveness in killing gram-negative bacteria when paired with antibiotics imipenem and relebactam.
  • Improved antibacterial activity is linked to stronger enzyme-inhibitor interactions and decreased bacterial cell efflux, as shown by experiments with different strains of Pseudomonas aeruginosa.

  • Our understanding of how the atria (upper chambers of the heart) work and how they can become dysfunctional (atrial cardiomyopathy) has improved, especially regarding their impact on various heart conditions.
  • Different atrial medical procedures can affect the way the atria function, and it's important for healthcare professionals to be aware of potential negative effects that may not show up right away.
  • By identifying early signs of atrial dysfunction, clinicians can intervene sooner, potentially preventing serious changes in atrial structure and function before they lead to visible health issues.

Purpose: To identify trajectory groups of work disability (WD), including sick leave and disability pension, and unemployment three years before and six years (from Y-3 to Y + 6) after a common mental disorder (CMD) diagnosis and to investigate associations of socio-demographic, work-related and clinical factors with trajectory membership.

Methods: A longitudinal nationwide register-based study was conducted including individuals aged 22-29 years, gainfully employed in the private sector, with a CMD diagnosis in specialised healthcare or prescribed antidepressant (N = 12,121) in 2014 (Year 0/Y0), with follow-up from Y-3 to Y + 6. Group-based trajectory analyses identified groups of individuals who followed similar trajectories of months of WD and unemployment, respectively.
