Spin relaxation, a defining mechanism of nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), has been a prime method for determining three-dimensional molecular structures and their dynamics in solution. It also plays key roles for contrast enhancement in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). In bulk solutions, rapid Brownian molecular diffusion modulates dipolar interactions between a spin pair from different molecules, resulting in very weak intermolecular relaxations.

In this work, we develop a thermodynamic perturbation theory using a two-density formalism framework to model the bond cooperativity effect for associating hard sphere and Lennard-Jones fluids. The theory predictions are compared with Monte Carlo simulation results and they are in excellent agreement. We incorporate bond angle dependent ring formation into the theory to calculate hydrogen fluoride thermodynamic properties.

Surfactants reduce the interfacial tension between phases, making them an important additive in a number of industrial and commercial applications from enhanced oil recovery to personal care products (e.g., shampoo and detergents).

In this manuscript we extend Wertheim's two-density formalism beyond its first order to model a system of fluid molecules with a single association site close to a planar hard wall with association sites on its surface in a density functional theory framework. The association sites of the fluid molecules are small enough that they can form only one bond, while the wall association sites are large enough to bond with more than one fluid molecule. The effects of temperature and of bulk fluid and wall site densities on the fluid density profile, extent of association, and competition between single and double bonding of fluid segments at the wall sites versus distance from the wall are presented.

Wertheim's multi-density formalism is extended for patchy colloidal fluids with two multiple bonding patches. The theory is developed as a density functional theory to predict the properties of an associating inhomogeneous fluid. The equation of state developed for this fluid depends on the size of the patch, and includes formation of cyclic, branched and linear clusters of associated species.

The thermodynamics of hydrogen bonding in 1-alcohol + water binary mixtures is studied using molecular dynamic (MD) simulation and the polar and perturbed chain form of the statistical associating fluid theory (polar PC-SAFT). The fraction of free monomers in pure saturated liquid water is computed using both TIP4P/2005 and iAMOEBA simulation water models. Results are compared to spectroscopic data available in the literature as well as to polar PC-SAFT.

The perturbed chain form of the polar statistical associating fluid theory (Polar PC-SAFT) was used to model lower 1-alcohol + n-alkane mixtures. The ability of the equation of state to predict accurate activity coefficients at infinite dilution was demonstrated as a function of temperature. Investigations show that the association term in SAFT plays an important role in capturing the right composition dependence of the activity coefficients in comparison with nonassociating models (UNIQUAC).

In this paper we develop a thermodynamic perturbation theory for two site associating fluids which exhibit bond cooperativity (system energy is non-pairwise additive). We include both steric hindrance and ring formation such that the equation of state is bond angle dependent. Here, the bond angle is the angle separating the centers of the two association sites.
