Gender differences in the professional experiences of Iran specialists in American academia.

The work on gender differences in academic life spans a wide array of colleges and universities, scholarly disciplines, and countries. Using a survey conducted in 2016 to capture "the state of the field" in Iranian Studies as US-Iran relations were in a brief thaw, this paper draws on some of these perspectives and explores gender differences in the professional experiences of Iranian Studies scholars working in the USA. Iranian Studies has grown and diversified in the USA since the 1960s.

Polyol-mediated synthesis of nickel oxide nanoparticles through aqueous sol-gel route.

Background: In this work, nickel oxide nanoparticles were prepared by polyol mediated aqueous route of sol-gel process using nickel nitrate hexahydrate as precursor, a mixture of isopropyl alcohol and water as solvent and glycerol for making polyol medium followed by calcination at various temperatures ranging from 500 to 900 °C. Characterization was carried out using X-ray diffractometry, infrared spectroscopy, differential scanning calorimetry-thermogravimetry and field emission scanning electron microscopy.

Results: The results confirmed the formation of face-cantered cubic structure of nickel oxide with its complete conversion after calcination at 900 °C; significant variation in the surface morphology was observed with the increasing calcination temperature.

COVID-19 and novel mRNA vaccines in pregnancy: an updated literature review.

The novel coronavirus, SARS-CoV-2, or COVID-19, has affected the world on a pandemic scale resulting in catastrophic outcomes and deaths. Currently, there is limited safety data specific to mRNA vaccine use in pregnant or lactating individuals and the potential risks to a pregnant individual and the fetus are unknown. We report an updated literature review of current information and evidence available to aid in the decision whether to vaccinate against COVID-19 currently being made by pregnant individuals and their healthcare providers so that they are able to make a well-informed recommendation and decision.

Graphene FETs with Low-Resistance Hybrid Contacts for Improved High Frequency Performance.

This work proposes a novel geometry field effect transistor with graphene as a channel-graphene field-effect transistor (GFET), having a hybrid contact that consists of an ohmic source/drain and its extended part towards the gate, which is capacitively coupled to the channel. The ohmic contacts are used for direct current (DC) biasing, whereas their capacitive extension reduces access region length and provides the radio frequency (RF) signal a low impedance path. Minimization of the access region length, along with the paralleling of ohmic contact's resistance and resistive part of capacitively coupled contact's impedance, lower the overall source/drain resistance, which results in an increase in current gain cut-off frequency, .

Coagulation activation in sickle cell trait: an exploratory study.

Recent epidemiologic data suggest that sickle cell trait (HbAS; AS) is a risk factor for venous thromboembolism. We conducted an exploratory study of healthy subjects with AS under baseline conditions to determine whether a chronic basal hyperactivation of coagulation exists, and if so, what mechanism(s) contribute to this state. Eighteen healthy AS individuals were compared to 22 African-American controls with a normal haemoglobin profile (HbAA; AA) and 17 patients with sickle cell disease (HbSS; SS).

Pilot study of erlotinib in patients with acute myeloid leukemia.

We conducted a pilot study to investigate clinical efficacy of tyrosine kinase inhibitor erlotinib in the treatment of acute myeloid leukemia (AML). A total of 11 patients with de novo AML were treated, including 2 with relapsed and/or refractory disease and 9 older patients with previously untreated AML. Patients with high baseline leukocyte count were excluded.

Synthesis of nitrogen-substituted methylenecyclopropanes by strain-driven Overman rearrangement of cyclopropenylmethyl trichloroacetimidates.

Nitrogen-substituted methylenecyclopropanes have been prepared by a strain-driven Overman rearrangement of cyclopropenylmethyl trichloroacetimidates. The reaction proceeds at room temperature and without the need of a transition-metal catalyst. Furthermore, it has been shown that C-3-substituted cyclopropenylmethyl trichloroacetimidates undergo a hydrolytic ring-opening reaction to form allenylcarbinols.

Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor and bleeding in a cynomolgus macaque (Macaca fascicularis).

Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRI) are associated with an increased bleeding risk in humans. This report describes a bleeding event in a cynomolgus macaque (Macaca fascicularis) treated with the SSRI sertraline HCl (Zoloft). During the treatment course, the subject presented with a maculopapular rash, cutaneous bleeding, epistaxis, bleeding from the eye, melena, and a severe thrombocytopenia.

Bleeding diathesis and hemophilias.

Patients with hemophilia and other congenital bleeding disorders are at risk for development of central nervous system (CNS) hemorrhage and can present with acute or chronic neurologic symptoms. These disorders are generally caused by qualitative or quantitative deficiency of components of hemostasis such as coagulation proteins, von Willebrand factor, or platelets. Rapid diagnosis and specific medical management such as coagulation factor replacement therapy are mandatory to minimize the morbidity and mortality of CNS bleeding.

[Impact of quality improvement process upon the state of nutritional support in a critical care unit].

A phase I dose-escalation study of clofarabine in combination with fractionated gemtuzumab ozogamicin in patients with refractory or relapsed acute myeloid leukemia.

Clofarabine and gemtuzumab ozogamicin (GO) are active agents against acute myeloid leukemia (AML), but have not previously been tested in combination. We conducted a phase I study to determine the maximum tolerated dose (MTD) and dose limiting toxicities (DLTs) of clofarabine when combined with GO in adult patients with relapsed or refractory AML. Twenty patients received clofarabine (10, 20 or 30 mg/m(2)) on days 1-5, with GO 3 mg/m(2)/day on days 1, 4 and 7.

Neoadjuvant clinical trial with sorafenib for patients with stage II or higher renal cell carcinoma.

Purpose: The multitargeted tyrosine kinase inhibitor sorafenib is used for the treatment of advanced-stage renal cell carcinoma. However, the safety and efficacy of this agent have yet to be evaluated in the preoperative period, where there may be potential advantages including tumor downstaging. This prospective trial evaluates the safety and feasibility of sorafenib in the preoperative setting.

Microparticles and cancer.

Cancer is a prothrombotic state, with an increased prevalence of arterial and venous thromboemboli. Microparticles (MPs) are sub-micron-sized vesicles derived from activated or apoptotic cancer cells and/or host cells that may causally contribute to these clinical events, although the strength of the evidence thus far is inconclusive. We review the state-of-the-art understanding of the origin of circulating MPs, their role as a potentially important procoagulant entity in cancer, and their clinically documented association with malignancies.

Preoperative tyrosine kinase inhibition as an adjunct to debulking nephrectomy.

Objectives: Since the introduction of tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKI), treatment of metastatic renal cell carcinoma (RCC) has undergone dramatic changes. However, the use of TKI therapy in adjunctive settings remains to be defined. We present a single-institution experience of patients who received preoperative TKI before nephrectomy for metastatic or unresectable disease.

An unusual reoccurrence of Waldenstrom's macroglobulinemia as pleural effusions that had a discordant response with treatment.

A 77-year-old female with a past medical history of Waldenstrom's macroglobulinemia presented with progressive shortness of breath and a newly diagnosed left pleural effusion. Numerous diagnostic studies were performed on the patient and finally a pleural biopsy confirmed pulmonary involvement of Waldenstrom's macroglobulinemia. As past studies have shown, Waldenstrom's involvement as a pulmonary process is uncommon.
