Incidence of childhood cancer in the province of Perugia (Italy).

This paper reports the incidence of childhood cancer in the Province of Perugia (Italy) in 1975-1979 and compares it with that reported in other areas in Italy and other western countries. Over the period studied the new cases of cancers in children under 15 years of age, recorded in the Province of Perugia, were 51 in males and 36 in females. The mean annual incidence rates per 100,000 were 17.

[Infantile idiopathic pulmonary hemosiderosis. Presentation of a case].

The present report deals with a patient affected by idiopathic pulmonary hemosiderosis. The diagnosis was made by pulmonary biopsy and ultrastructural and immunological study. We are treating the patient with iron therapy and desferrioxamine.

Induction of pyrimidine nucleoside metabolizing enzymes in E. coli B.

Induction studies on pyrimidine metabolizing enzymes in E. coli B have shown that the enzymes fall into three distinct groups according to their induction pattern. a) Cytidine deaminase and uridine phosphorylase, are induced by cytidine, CMP and adenosine; no induction was observed with uridine and AMP; b) thymidine phosphorylase is induced by cytidine, adenosine, all deoxyribonucleosides, CMP, deoxyribonucleotides, deoxyribose and deoxyribose-1-phosphate; c) uridine-cytidine kinase, uracil phosphoribosyltransferase, 5'-nucleotidase, thymidine kinase, are uninducible enzymes.

[Hypoplasia of intra- and extrahepatic bile ducts associated with congenital abnormalities].

The present report deals with a patient affected by Alagille's syndrome. The clinical hallmark of this syndrome is chronic cholestasis with ductular and extrahepatic hypoplasia and associated multiple congenital malformations. The diagnosis was made by hepatobiliary scanning with TC99-HIDA, transendoscopic cholangiography and liver biopsy.

Production of peptide ergot alkaloids in submerged culture by three isolates of Claviceps purpurea.

Three strains of Claviceps purpurea (Fr.) Tul., isolated from sclerotia grown on rye, produce under submerged conditions ergocryptine and ergotamine, ergocornine and ergosine, and ergocristine, respectively.
