Purpose Of Review: The goal of this chapter was to summarize the literature on childhood adversity and obesity, discuss treatment implications with a case example, and provide recommendations for trauma-informed care for clinicians who work with individuals living with obesity.

Recent Findings: Adversity in childhood is related directly and indirectly to obesity development. Upstream contributors like adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and other factors can lead to experiences of toxic stress and increased allostatic load, resulting in downstream effects of obesity and other chronic health conditions.

Purpose: Loneliness may compromise health-related quality of life (HRQOL) outcomes and the immunological impacts of loneliness via neuroendocrinological mechanisms likely have consequences for patients who have undergone a hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT).

Research Approach And Measures: Loneliness (pre-transplant), immunological recovery (Day 30, Day 100, 1-year post-transplant), and HRQOL (Day 100, 1 year) were measured in a sample of 205 patients completing a HSCT (127 autologous, 78 allogenic).

Results: Greater levels of pre-transplant loneliness predicted poorer HRQOL at Day 100 and 1-year follow-up.

In this exploratory study we studied brain activation and corticomuscular connectivity during standing in healthy individuals and persons with stroke within 40 days of cerebrovascular accident (CVA). EEG and EMG data were acquired during standing and analysis showed a trend of higher EEG power (hyper activation) in the stroke group. Direct corticomuscular connectivity between sensorimotor cortices and contralateral lower extremity muscles showed lower connectivity between affected motor, premotor, and sensory cortices, and contralateral lower extremity peripheral muscles with moderate effect size.

Sleep deprivation and sleep disturbance are pervasive among military personnel during and after combat deployment. However, occupational and other constraints often influence military workers to decline behavioral health services and prescription pharmaceutical sleep aids. This article, drawing on ethnographic interviews with National Guard veterans of combat deployment, demonstrates that soldiers with sleep disturbance frequently manage symptoms without medical supervision and by using ad hoc methods including alcohol use.

Understanding and predicting the response of plant communities to environmental changes and disturbances such as fire requires an understanding of the functional traits present in the system, including within and across species variability, and their dynamics over time. These data are difficult to obtain as few studies provide comprehensive information for more than a few traits or species, rarely cover more than a single growing season, and usually present only summary statistics of trait values. As part of a larger study seeking to understand the dynamics of plant communities in response to different prescribed fire regimes, we measured the functional traits of the understory plant communities located in over 140 permanent plots spanning strong gradients in soil moisture in a pyrogenic longleaf pine forest in North Carolina, USA, over a four-year period from 2011 and 2014.

The importance of intraspecific trait variability for community dynamics and ecosystem functioning has been underappreciated. There are theoretical reasons for predicting that species that differ in intraspecific trait variability will also differ in their effects on ecosystem functioning, particularly in variable environments.
