Real-time, simultaneous myoelectric control using force and position-based training paradigms.

In this paper, the simultaneous real-time control of multiple degrees of freedom (DOF) for myoelectric systems is investigated. The goal of this study, in which ten able-bodied subjects participated, was to directly compare three control paradigms of constrained (force targeted), unconstrained (position targeted) and resisted unconstrained (position targeted) limb contractions. Artificial neural networks (ANNs) were trained for simultaneous myoelectric control of the three degrees of freedom (DOFs) (wrist flexion-extension, abduction-adduction, and pronation-supination) using mirrored bilateral contractions.

Background: Urate urolithiasis in children has been reported in Japan in association with rotavirus (RV) gastro-enteritis (GE).

Lower eyelid retractor lysis versus Lockwood advancement to minimize lower eyelid retraction resulting from inferior rectus muscle recession.

Inferior rectus muscle recession tends to retract the lower eyelid. Several surgical techniques have been recommended to minimize this problem. This study compared Lockwood ligament advancement with lower lid retractor lysis (capsulopalpebral fascia disinsertion) and found that the latter technique, performed simultaneously with inferior rectus recession, more effectively minimizes postoperative lower lid retraction.

Synthesis and properties of Fe3O4-activated carbon magnetic nanoparticles for removal of aniline from aqueous solution: equilibrium, kinetic and thermodynamic studies.

In this study, powder activated carbon (PAC) and magnetic nanoparticles of iron (III) oxide were used for synthesis of Fe3O4-activated carbon magnetic nanoparticles (AC-Fe3O4 MNPs) as an adsorbent for the removal of aniline. This work studies the simultaneous and proportional myoelectric force and position estimation of multiple degrees of freedom (DOFs) for unilateral transradial amputees. Two experiments were conducted to compare force and position control paradigms. In the first, a force experiment, subjects performed isometric contractions, while the force applied by the limb and EMG were recorded.

Prognostic Value of Promoter Hypermethylation of Retinoic Acid Receptor Beta (RARB) and CDKN2 (p16/MTS1) in Prostate Cancer.

Objective: The molecular mechanism of prostate cancer is poorly understood. The aim of the study was to investigate the prevalence and prognostic value of promoter hypermethylation of retinoic acid receptor beta (RARB) and p16 among benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) and prostate cancer patients.

Methods: In this case-control study, 63 patients were included in three groups; 21 with BPH as the control group, 21 with prostate cancer and good prognostic factors (based on prostate-specific antigen, Gleason score and stage) as good prognosis group, and 21 with prostate cancer and poor prognostic features as poor prognosis group.

Successful extraocular muscle re-resection for a strabismus surgery complication: a "snapped" [severed, inadvertently] and retrieved inferior rectus muscle: a case report.

Standard therapy for patients with myelodysplastic syndromes.

The myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS) are a group of clonal hematopoietic stem cell disorders characterized by cytopenias, dysplastic changes in the hematopoietic precursors, and an increased risk of evolving into acute leukemia. Treatment for patients with MDS ranges from supportive care with blood products and/or growth factors up to allogeneic stem cell transplantation. Over the past decade, several novel therapeutic agents have been approved for clinical use.

Antimicrobial activity of Bacillus sp. strain FAS1 isolated from soil.

During screening for antibiotic producing microorganisms from environmental soil samples, the supernatant of a bacterial isolate was found to have antibacterial and antifungal activity on the standard indicator species. The standard cylinder-plate method was used to determine the inhibitory effect of the crude supernatant of each isolate on 6 bacterial and 3 fungal standard strains by measuring the diameter of inhibition zone. The highest inhibition zone on Aspergillus niger belonged to culture broth of isolate FAS1 by 25 mm, and this isolate was the most efficient microorganism to inhibit standard bacterial and fungal species.

Significance of thrombocytopenia in myelodysplastic syndromes: associations and prognostic implications.

We report a case of atypical listeriosis simulating pyelonephritis, in a pregnant woman who presented at 25 weeks gestation a left renal colic, operating in a febrile context; it was treated as urinary tract infection with gentamicin and ceftriaxon. The evolution was marked by the exacerbation of symptoms followed by in utero foetal death.

Introduction: The classical hypothesis of Bell's palsy, tempting in cases of peripheral facial palsy of rapid onset, must nevertheless be evoked with caution particularly if an intense pain is present, which should lead to search for a tumor of the skull base, especially the petrous bone.

Case Report: A 43-year-old man presented a peripheral facial palsy of rapidly progressive onset. A petrous bone tumor was diagnosed on the CT scan, which revealed an aspect of a glomic tumor or a metastatic lesion.
