A negative association between prevalence of diabetes and urban residential area greenness detected in nationwide assessment of urban Bangladesh.

Residential area greenness may influence diabetes, but limited studies have explored this relationship in developing countries. This study assessed the association between residential area greenness and diabetes among urban adults in Bangladesh. The mediation effect of the body mass index (BMI) was also assessed.

Background: The health hazards associated with the use of smokeless tobacco (SLT) are similar to those of smoking. However, unlike smoking, limited initiatives have been taken to control the use of SLT, despite its widespread use in South and Southeast Asian countries including Bangladesh. It is therefore important to examine the prevalence of SLT use and its social determinants for designing appropriate strategies and programmes to control its use.

Catalases CAT1 and CAT3 are not key enzymes in alleviating gamma irradiation-induced DNA damage, H2O2 accumulation, or lipid peroxidation in Arabidopsis thaliana.

Gamma irradiation increased catalase activities at 0.1 kGy and decreased them at 10 kGy in Arabidopsis wild type and catalase-deficient mutants, cat3-1 and cat1 cat3. Irradiation induced DNA damage, H2O2 accumulation, and lipid peroxidation in both mutants as well as the wild type.
