Organic pollutants (OPs) including organochlorine pesticides (OCPs), polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) have showed neuro-damaging effects, but studies concerning the autism spectrum disorder (ASD) risk are limited. A case-control study with ASD (n = 125) and healthy control (n = 125) children was conducted on the different land use settings across Punjab, Pakistan. Serum concentrations of 26 OCPs, 29 PCB congeners, 11 PBDEs and 32 PAHs were measured.

The torque teno virus (TTV) has a heterogeneous genome and its role in hepatitis C (HCV) infection is still controversial, therefore the purpose of the present study was to determine if there is any association between Hepatitis C and TTV co-infection and to determine the phylogenetic relationship between existing types in the Pakistani population. A total of 500 individuals (250 HCV positive patients and 250 healthy controls) were selected. DNA was extracted from serum samples and polymerase chain reaction (PCR) of the open reading frame 1 (ORF1) region of TTV was performed.

The current epidemiological study was designed to trace the involved risk factors in Hepatitis C Virus (HCV) spread and to identify any association between HCV genotypes and risk factors. Skin barrier function is primarily assigned to the outer epidermal layer, the stratum corneum (SC), mainly composed of corneocytes and lipid-enriched extracellular matrix. Epidermal ceramides (Cers) are essential barrier lipids, containing ultra-long-chain (ULC) fatty acids (FAs) with a unique ω-hydroxy group, which is necessary for binding to corneocyte proteins. In the SC, Cers are believed to derive from glucosylated intermediates, namely glucosylceramides (GlcCers), as surmised from human Gaucher's disease and related mouse models.

Glycosphingolipids (GSLs) constitute major components of enterocytes and were hypothesized to be potentially important for intestinal epithelial polarization. The enzyme UDP-glucose ceramide glucosyltransferase (Ugcg) catalyzes the initial step of GSL biosynthesis. Newborn and adult mice with enterocyte-specific genetic deletion of the gene Ugcg were generated.
