A detailed understanding of its cellular, molecular, and spatial architecture is essential for advancing precision medicine across aerodigestive tissues. The upper airway, particularly the nasal and oral mucosal epithelium, serves as a primary barrier for microbial interactions throughout life. Specialized niches like the anterior nares and the tooth are especially susceptible to dysbiosis and chronic inflammatory diseases. To investigate host-microbial interactions in mucosal epithelial cell types, we reanalyzed our single-cell RNA sequencing atlas of human oral mucosa, identifying polybacterial signatures (20% Gram-positive, 80% Gram-negative) within both epithelial- and stromal-resident cells.

Objectives: Transoral laser surgery for glottic stenosis (transverse cordotomy and anteromedial arytenoidectomy (TCAMA)) is often complicated by granulation tissue (GT) formation. GT can cause dyspnea and may require surgical removal to alleviate airway obstruction. Inhaled corticosteroids (ICS) have been shown to reduce benign vocal fold granulomas, however its use to prevent GT formation has not been described.

Mycobacterium chelonae is a rare, atypical nontuberculous bacterium that has been reported to be an underlying cause of persistent wound infections. Although there are several studies highlighting the role of M chelonae as the putative cause of other postoperative wound infections, to our knowledge there are no reports of infection following implant placement for repair of an orbital floor fracture. The authors present a unique case describing the management of a persistent postoperative infection in a young, immunocompetent patient with an orbital floor fracture repaired with a Stryker Medpor Titan implant.

Background: Types and correlates of pain medication agreement (PMA) violations in the primary care setting have not been analyzed.

Methods: A retrospective analysis was completed to examine patient characteristics and correlates of PMA violations, a proxy for substance misuse, over a 15-year period in an outpatient General Medicine Pain Service within the Division of General Medicine and Clinical Epidemiology, Department of Medicine, School of Medicine, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Patients who signed the PMA were managed for chronic pain from 2002 through 2017 (N = 1,210).
