Background: Lipoprotein(a) [Lp(a)] is an independent risk factor for atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease. The relationship between Lp(a) and major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE) in the context of high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) levels remains controversial due to conflicting results from previous studies.

Objectives: This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to clarify the association between Lp(a) and risk of MACE across different hs-CRP levels in both primary and secondary prevention settings.

Antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) are considered an attractive generation of novel antibiotics due to their advantageous properties such as a broad spectrum of antimicrobial activity against pathogens, low cytotoxicity, and drug resistance. Although they have common structural features and it has been widely demonstrated that bacterial membranes represent the main target of the peptide activity, the exact mechanism underlying the membrane perturbation by AMPs is not fully understood. Nevertheless, all the proposed modes of action implicate the preliminary interaction of AMPs with the negatively charged lipids in bacterial membranes.

The potential as a cancer therapeutic target of the recently reported hotspot binding region close to Lys508 of the β-catenin armadillo repeat domain was not exhaustively explored. In order to get more insight, we synthesized novel -(heterocyclylphenyl)benzenesulfonamides -. The new compounds significantly inhibited Wnt-dependent transcription as well as SW480 and HCT116 cancer cell proliferation.

EBV infects more than 90% of people globally, causing lifelong infection. The phases of the EBV life cycle encompass primary infection, latency, and subsequent reactivation or lytic phase. The primary infection usually happens without noticeable symptoms, commonly in early life stages.

An established hallmark of cancer cells is metabolic reprogramming, largely consisting in the exacerbated glucose uptake. Adipocytes in the tumor microenvironment contribute toward breast cancer (BC) progression and are highly responsive to metabolic fluctuations. Metabolic conditions characterizing obesity and/or diabetes associate with increased BC incidence and mortality.

Article Synopsis
  • - Systemic sclerosis (SSc) is an autoimmune disease that leads to issues like blood vessel dysfunction, immune system problems, and widespread tissue scarring, but studying it has been tough due to a lack of relevant research models.
  • - Researchers created an innovative in-vitro model using induced pluripotent stem cell-derived mesenchymal cells (iSCAR) to mimic the scarring seen in SSc, allowing for detailed investigation of gene expression tied to scarring at different stages.
  • - The study confirms that the iSCAR model can be effectively used to test antifibrotic drugs, demonstrating responses to different compounds and revealing significant insights into the genes involved in both early and late stages of fibrosis.

Introduction: Vancomycin-resistant Enterococci (VRE) infections cause significant morbidity and mortality in liver transplant (LT) recipients. Management is challenging, especially in the setting of daptomycin resistance (DR).

Methods: Single-center retrospective review of patients who underwent LT between January 1, 2020, and December 31, 2022, and developed VRE infections.

Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) is an acute disorder of the peripheral nervous system, causing flaccid paralysis, areflexia, and variable sensory involvement. Proximal as well distal muscles of the limbs can be involved, and in most severe and advanced cases progresses to respiratory failure and death. GBS is considered an autoimmune disease, and at the basis of the attack at the peripheral nervous system different mechanisms have been recognized, in particular viral infections or other immune stimulations.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates how coagulation factor X (FX) impacts tumor growth in castration-resistant prostate cancer (CRPC) by examining the prostate tumor microenvironment in mouse models through single-cell RNA sequencing.
  • It finds that immunosuppressive neutrophils (PMN-MDSCs) produce FX, which activates pathways that enhance tumor cell growth independent of androgens, indicating a role for FX in cancer progression.
  • Targeting FXa could impede the oncogenic function of PMN-MDSCs and potentially improve treatment outcomes when combined with existing therapies, with high levels of FX and related markers correlating to worse survival in CRPC patients.

Congenital Chagas disease (CCD) is a worldwide neglected problem with significant treatment limitations. This study aimed to evaluate the potential of Copaifera spp. oleoresins (ORs) against Trypanosoma cruzi infection in trophoblast cells (BeWo lineage) and human chorionic villous explants (HCVE).

is associated with gastrointestinal diseases, and its treatment is challenging due to antibiotic-resistant strains, necessitating alternative therapies. Brazilian red propolis (BRP), known for its diverse bioactive compounds with pharmaceutical properties, was investigated for its anti- activity, focusing on biofilm formation inhibition and eradication. BRP was tested against (ATCC 43526) using several assays: time-kill, nucleotide leakage, biofilm formation inhibition (determining the minimum inhibitory concentration of biofilm of 50%-MICB, and cell viability), and biofilm eradication (determining the minimum eradication concentration of biofilm of 99.

Context: The utility of thyroglobulin (Tg) in the follow-up of differentiated thyroid cancer (DTC) patients has been well-documented. Although third-generation immunoassays have improved accuracy, limitations persist (interfering anti-Tg antibodies and measurement variability). Evolving treatment strategies require a reevaluation of Tg thresholds for optimal patient management.

The State University of North Fluminense Darcy Ribeiro (UENF) has been developing for fifteen years a breeding program that aims at the development of new cultivars of elephant grass due to its high potential and the low availability of cultivars developed by genetic breeding programs that meet the needs of producers in the State of Rio de Janeiro. In this sense, inbred families were also obtained as a way of fixing potential alleles for traits related to production, as the inbreeding process apparently does not strongly affect elephant grass in aspects related to inbreeding depression. This study aimed to estimate genetic diversity, variance components and prediction of genotypic values in 11 (S) elephant grass families, and perform the truncation and simultaneous selection of traits using the selection index, by mixed models.

Article Synopsis
  • * It involved surgical samples from EGC patients with a 10-year follow-up, using specialized genomic panels to examine molecular characteristics and pathway instability scores.
  • * Key findings indicated that the aggressive Pen A subtype has more ARID1A mutations and greater genetic instability, while LRP1B alterations were linked to a higher risk of relapse or death, suggesting potential markers for prognosis in EGC patients.

Article Synopsis
  • Melon is a vital crop in Brazil, producing 699,281 tons annually, but is severely affected by fungal diseases, particularly anthracnose, which affects over 80% of plants during the rainy season in northeastern Brazil.
  • A study conducted from June 2022 to June 2023 involved collecting symptomatic melon leaves from various farms in Rio Grande do Norte, leading to the isolation and study of different fungal colonies indicative of anthracnose.
  • The research identified eleven fungal isolates, including Colletotrichum spp., with specific morphological characteristics and further analysis was performed on their DNA for comprehensive understanding of their pathogenicity.

Common bean provides diet rich in vitamins, fiber, minerals, and protein, which could contribute into food security of needy populations in many countries. Developing genotypes that associate favorable agronomic and grain quality traits in the common bean crop could increase the chances of adopting new cultivars black bean. In this context, the present study aimed at selection of superior black bean lines using multi-variate indexes, Smith-Hazel-index, and genotype by yield*trait biplot analysis.

Alcoholic liver disease (ALD) is currently, worldwide, the second most common cause of human fatalities every year. Alcohol use disorders (AUDs) lead to 80% of hepatotoxic deaths, and about 40% of cases of cirrhosis are alcohol-related. An acceptable daily intake (ADI) of ethanol is hard to establish and studies somewhat controversially recommend a variety of dosages of ADI, whilst others regard any intake as dangerous.
