Introduction: The incidence of perioperative pressure injuries (PPIs) at a military medical treatment facility (MTF) increased from three PPI events in 2018 to five PPI events in the first half of 2019. The purpose of this quality improvement initiative was to determine whether an evidence-based PPI prevention program introduced during the second half of 2019 reduced pressure injuries compared to the previous 1.5 years that followed the standard of care for perioperative patient positioning.

Clearly identifying patients with prediabetes and diabetes prior to surgery allows the clinical team to target interventions and reduce the risks of complications. Yet, protocols for preoperative diabetes screening vary. The purpose of this article is to present an evidence-based practice project examining the implementation of preoperative diabetes screening in an elective total joint patient population.

Background: The identification of BRAF mutations in thyroid cancer has prognostic and therapeutic implications. Although the gold standard for identifying BRAF mutations is molecular testing, the ability to perform BRAF p.V600E immunostaining on fine-needle aspiration (FNA) samples can facilitate the rapid triaging of patients to treatment options.

Purpose: The Global Initiative for Chronic Obstructive Lung Disease guidelines provide recommendations to manage chronic obstructive lung disease (COPD) exacerbations. This study assessed the management of inpatient COPD exacerbations at an urban teaching hospital.

Methods: A retrospective cohort analysis of adults admitted between December 2010 and August 2012 with a COPD exacerbation was conducted.

Introduction: The increasing use of endoscopic ultrasound-guided fine needle aspiration (EUS-FNA) cytology to examine pancreatic neoplasms has led to an increase in the diagnosis of metastases to the pancreas. Renal cell carcinoma (RCC) is the most common metastasis to the pancreas. Our study examines 33 cases of metastatic RCC to the pancreas sampled by EUS-FNA from four large tertiary care hospitals.

Background: Cytology plays a pivotal role in the preoperative diagnosis of pancreatic cysts. Here the Papanicolaou Society of Cytopathology (Pap Society) guidelines were used to reclassify and assess the malignancy risk of cytology diagnoses of histologically proven pancreatic neoplastic mucinous cysts.

Methods: A database search (January 2000 to June 2014) was performed for pancreatic neoplastic mucinous cyst resections with endoscopic ultrasound-guided fine-needle aspiration within the preceding year.

Background: Pancreatic fine-needle aspiration (FNA) is useful for diagnosing pancreatic masses. This article describes the experience of a single institution with metastases to the pancreas sampled by FNA and provides a review of the literature.

Methods: Medical records were retrospectively searched for pancreatic FNA that showed metastatic disease.

Female Sprague-Dawley rats provide an animal model for studying the role of nutrition in renal health due to their sensitivity to diet-induced alterations in kidney function. Nephrocalcinosis, a common renal abnormality found in rats, has been implicated in subsequent renal failure. Simple dietary manipulations, such as changing the source of dietary protein, may influence nephrocalcinosis.

Tens of thousands of transfusion-dependent (eg, thalassemia) patients worldwide suffer from chronic iron overload and its potentially fatal complications. The oral iron chelator deferasirox has become commercially available in many countries since 2006. Although this alternative to parenteral deferoxamine has been a major advance for patients with transfusional hemosiderosis, a proportion of patients have suboptimal response to the maximum approved doses (30 mg/kg per day), and do not achieve negative iron balance.
