Pathogens and pests secrete proteins (effectors) to interfere with plant immunity through modification of host target functions and disruption of immune signalling networks. The extent of convergence between pathogen and herbivorous insect virulence strategies is largely unexplored. Non-secretory multiple myeloma is a rare form of the disease that presents a diagnostic challenge. A 69-year-old woman presented to the emergency department with a pathological fracture of the right clavicle, along with a history of asthenia and middle back pain in the preceding three months. Workup revealed multiple focal lytic bone lesions in the clavicles, ribs, skull and thoracic- lumbar-sacral spine, without evidence of anemia, hypercalcemia or renal failure, with no abnormal immunofixation in the serum or urine and with normal serum free light chain ratios.

We report a case of a 56-year-old Brazilian woman, with relapsing lepromatous leprosy, and onychomycosis caused by a non-dermatophyte filamentous fungi. The pathogenic fungi was identified as and treated with chemical abrasion of the nail with 40% urea and application of terbinafine cream. Onychomycosis caused by species is rare, and this is the second reported case.

Thirty people (mostly children) experienced an episode of skin rash days after a sand sifting beach operation at Porto Pim Beach in Faial, Azores during June 2019. An environmental and epidemiologic investigation was conducted to identify the cause of the outbreak of skin rash. The epidemiologic investigation found that some of the patients experiencing symptoms had never entered the beach water.

We report a case of a patient with lymphocutaneous sporotrichosis in the right upper limb. The fungus was identified as senso stricto by calmodulin gene sequencing. The initial treatment was itraconazole (200 mg/day), but antifungal susceptibility demonstrated high resistant to this and another six antifungals, with exception to terbinafine.

Bladder carcinogenesis and tumour progression is accompanied by profound alterations in protein glycosylation on the cell surface, which may be explored for improving disease management. In a search for prognosis biomarkers and novel therapeutic targets we have screened, using immunohistochemistry, a series of bladder tumours with differing clinicopathology for short-chain O-glycans commonly found in glycoproteins of human solid tumours. These included the Tn and T antigens and their sialylated counterparts sialyl-Tn(STn) and sialyl-T(ST), which are generally associated with poor prognosis.

Carbon dioxide capture and storage (CCS), involving the injection of CO into the sub-seabed, is being promoted worldwide as a feasible option for reducing the anthropogenic CO emissions into the atmosphere. However, the effects on the marine ecosystems of potential CO leakages originating from these storage sites have only recently received scientific attention, and little information is available on the possible impacts of the resulting CO-enriched seawater plumes on the surrounding benthic ecosystem. In the present study, we conducted a 20-weeks mesocosm experiment exposing coastal sediments to CO-enriched seawater (at 5000 or 20,000 ppm), to test the effects on the microbial enzymatic activities responsible for the decomposition and turnover of the sedimentary organic matter in surface sediments down to 15 cm depth.
