Within the first 24 and 48 h, the total antibiotic supply was significantly higher than the minimal inhibitory concentration required for the majority of the gram-negative bacteria. Although gentamicin was completely released from the matrix after 48 h by a normal diffusion mechanism, ciprofloxacin or norfloxacin release was characterized by a 2-phase release mechanism due to binding to nHA by complexation with calcium ion.
