Article Synopsis
  • - Vadadustat is an oral medication tested for treating anemia in patients with dialysis-dependent chronic kidney disease (CDK) and was compared to darbepoetin alfa (DA) in a phase 3b clinical trial.
  • - The trial showed that the once-daily dosing of vadadustat was effective and met the noninferiority criteria when compared to DA, meaning it was at least as good as DA for maintaining hemoglobin levels, while the 3-times-weekly dosing did not meet this threshold.
  • - Overall, both forms of vadadustat had similar safety profiles to DA, but more patients in the DA group needed additional treatments for low hemoglobin levels during the study.

Patients on maintenance hemodialysis are particularly prone to opportunistic infections because of their increased exposure to antibiotics, frequent vascular access, and altered cellular immunity. This case report discusses a 63-year-old African American patient on maintenance hemodialysis who presented with acute painful swelling of her left knee and fever. She was diagnosed to have septic arthritis, candidemia, and arteriovenous (AV) graft infection caused by Candida albicans.
