Article Synopsis
  • COVID-19 has been linked to an increase in mucormycosis and subsequently septic cavernous sinus thrombosis, prompting a study on the effects of anticoagulation (AC) in patients with COVID-related complications.
  • In this retrospective study involving 29 patients, researchers compared health outcomes, including mortality and neurological sequelae, between those who received AC and those who did not.
  • The findings indicated no significant differences in recovery or mortality rates between AC receivers and non-receivers, but due to the small sample size, the results remain inconclusive regarding the effectiveness of AC in this context.*

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigated the safety, efficacy, and immune response to the Sinopharm BBIBP-CorV vaccine in people with multiple sclerosis (PwMS) receiving various disease-modifying therapies (DMTs).
  • Out of 261 screened PwMS, 209 were included, showing 66% experienced non-serious adverse events, while only 4.8% had post-vaccination MS activity, and 14.8% had breakthrough COVID-19 infections.
  • Findings revealed that those on fingolimod and anti-CD20 therapies had significantly lower odds of developing specific antibody responses, indicating that these treatments might affect vaccine immunogenicity.

Cellular signaling generates calcium (Ca) ions, which are ubiquitous secondary messengers decoded by calcium-dependent protein kinases, calcineurins, calreticulin, calmodulins (CAMs), and CAM-binding proteins. Previous studies in the model plant Arabidopsis thaliana have shown the critical roles of the CAM-BINDING PROTEIN 60 (CBP60) protein family in plant growth, stress responses, and immunity. Certain CBP60 factors can regulate plant immune responses, like pattern-triggered immunity, effector-triggered immunity, and synthesis of major plant immune-activating metabolites salicylic acid (SA) and N-hydroxypipecolic acid (NHP).

Molecular genetic analyses in the model species have demonstrated the major roles of different CALMODULIN-BINDING PROTEIN 60 (CBP60) proteins in growth, stress signaling, and immune responses. Prominently, CBP60g and SARD1 are paralogous CBP60 transcription factors that regulate numerous components of the immune system, such as cell surface and intracellular immune receptors, MAP kinases, WRKY transcription factors, and biosynthetic enzymes for immunity-activating metabolites salicylic acid (SA) and -hydroxypipecolic acid (NHP). However, their function, regulation, and diversification in most species remain unclear.

Background: Door-to-needle (DTN) is the duration between patient's arrival at the hospital and receiving intravenous thrombolysis in ischemic stroke settings, for which studies have reported delays in women. The "D's of stroke care" describes 8 steps (D1 to D8) in patients' time tracker. We implemented simple modifications to the "D's of stroke care" by splitting D4 and D6 steps into these substeps: patients' arrival to the emergency room (D4-A), early assessment by a neurologist (D4-B), neurologist decision on patient's eligibility to receive recombinant tissue plasminogen activator (D6-A), and patient's transfer to the stroke unit (D6-B).

Introduction: The storage of harvested stem cells, in standard refrigerators at +4°C, is a simple and inexpensive alternative to cryopreservation for most patients living in countries with limited resources. We present the 10 years' experience of our single center from Oran in Algeria using non-cryopreserved stem cells after conditioning with high dose chemotherapy, in a large group of myeloma and lymphoma patients.

Methods: From May 2009 to December 2019, autologous stem cell transplantation (ASCT) was carried out in our center, of which 420 with multiple myeloma (MM) and 154 patients with lymphoma.

Mobilization failure in patients is a major therapeutic concern which makes subsequent ASCT impossible. A new growth factor called Plerixafor (Mozobil®) developed by the pharmaceutical industry (Sanofi-aventis, France), is a chemoreceptor antagonist, CXCR4 type, which disrupts the interaction of SDFI and CXCR4, thereby enhancing the effect of G-CSF mobilization and is especially indicated for mobilization failure. Currently, there is a generic of plerixafor developed by the pharmaceutical industry (Hetero Drugs Ltd, India).

  • * A study involving 62 Iranian patients with MG found that the prevalence of depression was high, with 64.5% reporting symptoms according to one screening tool (HDRS) and 53.2% according to another (BDI-II), primarily presenting as mild depression.
  • * The study concluded that factors like age, sex, disease duration, and medication dosages did not correlate with depression severity; however, the number of academic years was associated with lower depression scores, indicating a need for further research on depression in MG to

We have developed a sensitive electrochemical immunosensor for the detection of prostate-specific antigen (PSA), based on covalently immobilizing of anti-PSA and redox mediator (thionine) onto gold nanoparticles-incorporated polyamidoamine dendrimer (AuNPs-PAMAM) and multiwalled carbon nanotubes/ionic liquid/chitosan nanocomposite (MWCNTs/IL/Chit) as the support platform. The MWCNTs/IL/Chit nanocomposite and synthesized AuNPs were characterized using SEM and TEM microscopy techniques. Greatly amplified immunoassay was established by sandwiching the antigen between anti-PSA immobilized on the MWCNTs/IL/Chit/AuNPs-PAMAM interface and anti-PSA labeled with horseradish peroxidase (HRP-labeled anti-PSA) as secondary antibody.

Background: Economic development and socio-demographic changes have led to increased frequency of cardiovascular disease and other chronic diseases in Tunisia.

Objectives: To assess the prevalence of different types of dyslipidemia and to examine their association with sociodemographic characteristics in the Greater Tunis population.

Methods: The study included 2712 subjects (1228 men and 1484 women) aged 35-70 years, recruited during the years 2004 and 2005 from the Greater Tunis population.

Infective endocarditis is a rare complication of patent ductus arteriosus nowadays. About two patients, aged 7 and 5 years old, we diagnosed and treated a patent ductus arteriosus complicated with an infective vegetative endocarditis with a risk of pulmonary embolism. We report in this observation this clinical and surgical experience.
