Electrochemical oxidation of hydroquinone, catechol, and some of their monosubstituted derivatives has been studied in the presence of 3-hydroxy-1H-phenalen-1-one (2) as a nucleophile in water/acetonitrile (80/20) solutions using cyclic voltammetry and controlled-potential coulometry methods. The results revealed that quinones derived from oxidation of hydroquinones and catechols participate in Michael addition reactions with 2. The formed adducts convert to the corresponding benzofuran derivatives via different mechanisms.

Material And Methods: We reviewed the cases of 45 patients who underwent surgery between January 1978 and December 2004 after medical treatment for pulmonary tuberculosis considered successful. The series included 31 men and 14 women, mean age 31 years (range: 7-55 yr).
Estr-4-en-3,17-dione II, 17beta-hydroxyestr-4-en-3-one III, 15alpha-hydroxyestr-4-en-3,17-dione IV, and 15alpha,17beta-dihydroxyestr-4-en-3-one V were produced by microbial transformation of nandrolone decanoate I in the culture of Acremonium strictum PTCC 5282. Bioconversion characteristics observed were ester hydrolysis, oxidation, and hydroxylation. Each microbial product was purified chromatographically and characterized on the basis of spectral data obtained from (1)H-NMR,( 13)C-NMR, FT-IR, MS, and physical constants such as melting point and optical rotation.

Patients And Methods: Retrospective study of data of patients older than 15 years who were operated on for acute intestinal intussusceptions from January 1997 to December 2001.
Results: Twelve of the patients were males and eight females with an average age of 41 years (range: 16-71).
Objective: To evaluate the cumulative prevalence of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease risk factors in a representative sample of Iranian adolescents.
Methods: The subjects of this cross-sectional study were 1,000 girls and 1,000 boys, ages 11-18 years, selected by multi stage-random cluster sampling from urban and rural areas of three cities in Iran.
Results: The prevalence of physical inactivity, dyslipidemia, smoking, high blood pressure and obesity (body mass index >95th percentile) were 66.
Introduction: There are numerous correlations between hypertension and the metabolic syndrome, although this is not always the case. The objective of this study was to compare the prevalence of the metabolic syndrome and its different phenotypes among hypertensive and normotensive subjects.
Materials And Methods: This cross-sectional study was performed on a representative sample of adults living in 3 cities in Iran.
Objectives: To assess the serum lipid profiles of Iranian adolescents and their correlation with dietary fat intake and to evaluate the knowledge, attitude, and practice (KAP) of students, parents, and school staff.
Methods: The subjects of this cross-sectional study were 2000 students (1000 girls and 1000 boys), ages 11-18 years, selected by multistage random sampling, and one of their parents (2000 subjects), as well as 500 school staff in urban and rural areas of two provinces in Iran (one for further interventions and the other for reference). The data were obtained by questionnaires, anthropometric measurements, 3-day food record form, and a 20-item food frequency questionnaire (FFQ).

A protective and anamnestic type of response was observed in 90% (44/49) of the neonates. The mean titer of anti-HBs antibody was significantly higher following supplementary vaccination, compared to that achieved after primary vaccination.
