- Anthocyanins (ACs) protect neurons from neurotoxicity caused by β-amyloid, but their ability to cross the blood-brain barrier (BBB) was studied.
- AC extracts from black currants or strawberries were given to rats, and urine and brain samples were analyzed.
- The findings showed that while some other compounds had better BBB permeability, ACs had low permeability, indicating they may not directly prevent β-amyloid-induced neurotoxicity.
