The impact of SNAP-Ed interventions on California students' diet and physical activity during COVID-19.

Objective: School-based CalFresh Healthy Living (CFHL) (California's SNAP-Ed) interventions adapted to new learning environments necessitated by COVID-19. We examined the impact of these interventions on student diet and physical activity (PA) outcomes.

Design: Quasi-experimental, two-group, pre-post.

Validity and Reliability of a Site-Level Assessment Questionnaire to Assess Nutrition and Physical Activity Practices in Schools.

Schools are an ideal setting for policy, systems, and environmental approaches to obesity prevention. Although school health environment assessments exist for planning purposes, we developed and tested a comprehensive questionnaire that is suitable for both evaluation and planning. Reliability was measured by comparing data collected by school personnel from low-income elementary schools across California at two time points, an average of 2 months apart ( = 23).

Support for Policies to Improve the Nutritional Impact of the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program in California.

The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) provides a vital buffer against hunger and poverty for 47.6 million Americans. Using 2013 California Dietary Practices Survey data, we assessed support for policies to strengthen the nutritional influence of SNAP.

California adults increase fruit and vegetable consumption from 1997-2007.

Objective: To determine whether fruit and vegetable consumption among California adults significantly increased from 1997-2007.

Design: Biennial telephone surveillance surveys of California adults' dietary practices.

Participants: California adults (n = 9,105 total all 6 surveys).

Usage and recall of the Food Stamp Office Resource Kit (FSORK) by food stamp applicants in 4 California counties.

Objective: To evaluate recall and usage of the Food Stamp Office Resource Kit (FSORK), a set of nutrition education materials designed for use in food stamp offices.

Design: Client intercept exit surveys, an environmental scan, and individual observations of clients in the food stamp office.

Setting: Four food stamp offices in California.

Using an opinion poll to build an obesity-prevention social marketing campaign for low-income Asian and Hispanic immigrants: report of findings.

Objective: To gain opinions from low-income, limited-English-speaking Hispanic and Asian immigrants for formative research in a social marketing campaign.

Design: Nineteen questions on obesity prevention-related topics were embedded into a larger random digit-dial survey investigating the effects of language and cultural barriers on health care access. Participants were selected by ethnic encoding from consumer databases.

Background: Elevated levels of lipids, such as total cholesterol (TC), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL), and triglycerides (TG), are widely recognized as risk factors for cardiovascular disease (CVD). Oxidized LDL (OxLDL) is an emerging risk factor considered relevant in oxidative stress and endothelial dysfunction, which is implicated in the progression of CVD. Consumption of a diet rich in polyphenols may be cardioprotective through its impact on oxidative stress and protecting LDL from oxidation.
