Monitoring degraded areas is essential for evaluation of the quality of the rehabilitation process. In this study, we evaluate how the physical and chemical characteristics of the mixture of iron ore tailings with the soil have affected the soil microbial biomass and activity in areas along the Gualaxo do Norte River after the Fundão Dam disaster. Composite soil samples were collected from areas that were impacted (I) and not impacted (NI) by the tailings.

Rhizobia and endophytic bacteria isolated from rainforest fragments within an iron ore mining site of the Eastern Brazilian Amazon.

The aim of the present study was to isolate and evaluate the diversity of rhizobial and endophytic bacterial strains from undisturbed native rainforests within an iron ore mining site of the Serra Norte de Carajás in the Eastern Brazilian Amazon region to assess their biotechnological utility in reclamation of areas. Experiments were conducted to capture strains from samples of the soil of these forests at the sites Arenito II, Noroeste II, and Sul IV using Macroptilium atropurpureum and Mimosa acutistipula var. ferrea as trap host plants.

Chest computed tomography in COVID-19 pneumonia: a retrospective study of 155 patients at a university hospital in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Objective: To define diagnostic criteria for coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) on computed tomography (CT); to study the correlation between CT and polymerase chain reaction (PCR) testing for infection with severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2; and to determine whether the extent of parenchymal involvement and the need for mechanical ventilation are associated with the CT findings and clinical characteristics of patients with COVID-19.

Materials And Methods: This was a retrospective study of 155 patients with COVID-19 treated between March and May 2020. We attempted to determine whether the CT findings correlated with age and clinical variables, as well as whether the need for mechanical ventilation correlated with the extent of the pulmonary involvement.

On polarization functions for Gaussian basis sets.

In this work, we introduce a technique to choose polarization functions directly from the primitive set of Gaussian exponent without the necessity to optimize or even reoptimized them. For this purpose, initially, we employed Gaussian basis sets generated by using the Polynomial Generator Coordinate Hartree-Fock (PGCHF) method, and later we extended our technique to the cc-pVQZ and pc-3 Gaussian basis sets in order to show how our technique works and how good it is. Using the new polarized basis sets, from our technique, total electronic energies, equilibrium geometries, and vibrational frequencies were calculated for a set of molecules containing atoms from H(Z = 1) to Ba(Z = 56).

Leguminosae native nodulating bacteria from a gold mine As-contaminated soil: Multi-resistance to trace elements, and possible role in plant growth and mineral nutrition.

Efficient N-fixing Leguminosae nodulating bacteria resistant to As may facilitate plant growth on As-contaminated sites. Accurate Gaussian basis sets for atoms from H to Ba were obtained by means of the generator coordinate Hartree-Fock (GCHF) method based on a polynomial expansion to discretize the Griffin-Wheeler-Hartree-Fock equations (GWHF). The discretization of the GWHF equations in this procedure is based on a mesh of points not equally distributed in contrast with the original GCHF method. Four different isomers were characterized at the B3LYP/aug-cc-pVTZ: COP (i1), cPCO (i2), PCO (i3), and CPO (i4). The linear species i3 is the global minimum in the ground state surface, while i4 is a bent structure, and i2 is a cyclic isomer.

Dried extracts of Encholirium spectabile (Bromeliaceae) present antioxidant and photoprotective activities in vitro.

The antioxidant and photoprotective activities of dried extracts from the leaves of Encholirium spectabile were investigated. It was also evaluated the total phenolic and flavonoid contents by the Folin-Ciocalteu and aluminum chloride methods, respectively. Antioxidant activities of the extracts were evaluated by using of 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazil (DPPH) radical scavenging and β-carotene-linoleic acid bleaching and compared with ascorbic acid, butylated hydroxyanisole (BHA) and butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT) used as reference compounds.

[Management of nursing personnel with job security: perceptions of nurses].

This study aimed to identify a university hospital nurses' perception on the management of nursing personnel with job security, using data collected from a qualitative research developed with sixteen nurses, in 2010. The data, collected through semi-structured interviews, and analyzed by Thematic Analysis, produced two empirical categories: Security at work versus the impunity afforded by tenure; Job stability and (un)involvement in nursing work. It has been verified that job stability provides security of employment; security spawns impunity, and nurses are reluctant to conduct administrative proceedings.
