Unlabelled: The development and course of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) are significantly influenced by inflammation and oxidative stress. Antioxidant therapy is a promising therapeutic option to enhance the clinical results of these individuals in this particular scenario. The purpose of this study is to assess the impact of curcumin, with or without piperine, on cytokines, fecal calprotectin (CalF), and oxidative stress enzymatic and non-enzymatic indicators in patients with IBD.

This review analyzes the occurrence and co-exposure of aflatoxins and fumonisins in conventional and organic corn, and compares the vulnerability to contamination of both. The risks of fungal contamination in corn are real, mainly by the genera and , producers of aflatoxins and fumonisins, respectively. Aflatoxins, especially AFB, are related to a high incidence of liver cancer, and the International Agency Research of Cancer (IARC) classified them in group 1A 'carcinogenic to humans'.

The remission of obesity-related diseases following bariatric surgery appears to result from the reorganization of metabolic and hormonal pathways involving adipokines. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between changes in body adiposity and serum adipokine levels, as well as the association between variations in adiponectin or resistin levels and cardiometabolic risk blood biomarkers before and after Roux-en-Y gastric bypass. A longitudinal and prospective study was conducted with bariatric surgery patients.

Article Synopsis
  • Marine litter in the deep ocean is a hidden issue that’s not well understood due to limited data, but this study reports its presence on the Southwestern Atlantic continental slope.
  • Researchers collected marine litter using bottom trawling across 28 sampling stations, retrieving a total of 603 items weighing 13.8 kg, with plastic being the predominant material.
  • Litter density was significantly higher off the coast of São Paulo compared to Santa Catarina, likely linked to the influence of nearby oil and gas platforms and large cargo ships.

The objective of this study is to assess the effectiveness of treatment for inflammatory bowel diseases in modulating oxidative stress biomarkers and cytokine levels. A systematic review of clinical trials was conducted, searching electronic databases including PubMed, Science Direct, and Scopus. After excluding articles that did not meet the inclusion criteria, 19 studies were included in the systematic review and 8 in the meta-analysis (6 for antioxidant capacity, 6 for superoxide dismutase (SOD), and 5 for lipid peroxidation analyzed through malondialdehyde (MDA) levels).

The study aimed to assess the influence of excessive use of a photostimulable phosphor plate (PSP) on the density, image noise, and contrast of radiographs. For that, radiographs of an acrylic block were acquired with a PSP of the Express intraoral system to assess the density and image noise. Initially, five images were obtained and exported (first group).

Classically, osteopontin (OPN) has been described as a secreted glycophosprotein. Indeed, most data concerning its physiological and pathological roles are mainly related to the secreted OPN (sOPN). However, there are several instances in which intracellular OPN (iOPN) has been described, presenting some specific roles in distinct experimental models, such as in the immune system, cancer cells, and neurological disorders.

This study aimed to assess the microstructure, chemical composition, and image quality of different photostimulable phosphor plates (PSP). Four PSP systems, Express®, Digora®, VistaScan®, and Apixia,® were assessed. Five radiographs of a homogeneous acrylic phantom were obtained with the PSP of each system, to acquire a total of 20 images.

Background: There are no specific recommendations for prevention of surgical site infection (SSI) caused by multidrug resistant Gram-negative bacilli (MDR-GNB). Our objective was to systematically review the literature evaluating the efficacy and safety of measures specifically designed to prevent MDR-GNB SSI.

Methods: We searched MEDLINE, EMBASE, CINAHL and LILACS databases up to February 18, 2020.

Hepatitis B and C are the most common causes of liver disease worldwide. The two infections share many similarities such as a global distribution, the same routes of transmission, hepatotropism, and the ability to cause chronic infection. The consequences of HBV/HCV coinfection are still being studied.

Objective: The aim of this study was to analyze the spatial distribution of outpatient physical therapy rehabilitation services and associate it with the geographic location of users' households.

Methods: The public physical therapy rehabilitation services and addresses of users' households in Campo Grande (MS) were georeferenced in 2017-2019.

Results: Five physical therapy clinics were identified to supply the demand of 31,774 scheduled users.

Article Synopsis
  • Thyroid cancer is the most prevalent endocrine tumor with generally good prognosis, but aggressive forms can lead to treatment resistance and metastasis.
  • Epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) and its reverse process are critical in cancer progression, with osteopontin (OPN) being a significant regulator of EMT in various tumors.
  • This review explores the link between OPN and EMT in thyroid cancer, aiming to highlight how OPN could influence tumor development and suggesting avenues for future therapeutic and diagnostic advancements.

Background: Chronic liver disease is associated with malnutrition that negatively impacts a patient's health-related quality of life (HRQoL).

Aim: To evaluate the short-term effect of whey protein supplementation on the HRQoL and nutritional and functional status of patients waiting for liver transplantation.

Methods: This was a double-blind randomized clinical trial with patients waiting for liver transplantation who were randomized into two groups: WP (whey protein supplementation) and the control (casein supplementation).

Background: As the hard palate is a central structure of the skull, and its close relationship with the nasal cavity, oral cavity, and maxillary sinuses, it would be of interest to study if there is a relationship between this bone and other structures of the stomatognathic system. Thus, this study aimed to assess the dimensions of the hard palate and associate them with sex, and skeletal and breathing patterns. Also, to investigate if there is a relationship between these dimensions and the volumes of the upper airways and maxillary sinuses.

Objective: Investigation of the antiglycation and antitumoral potential of standardized and saponins-enriched extracts of herbal medicine.

Materials And Methods: The procedures for the evaluation of the antiglycation activity of the standardized (TtSE) and saponins-enriched (TtEE) extracts of were: determination of relative mobility in electrophoresis (RME), free amino groups using OPA method and advanced glycation end-products (AGEs) fluorescence. Antioxidant activity was determined by DPPH radical scavenging test.

Evaluating factors that may influence the nose dimensions and, therefore, contribute to the singularity of a person, is important for obtaining a precise facial reconstruction (FR) in forensic anthropology. Thus, the aim in this study was to evaluate the influence of sex, skeletal class, and facial type on nose dimensions of Brazilian individuals using cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) scans. CBCT images of 54 males and 67 females were classified according to skeletal class (class I, II, or III) and facial type (brachycephalic, dolichocephalic and mesocephalic).

Purpose: To evaluate the influence of low-dose protocols, with different numbers of basis images, on the precision of linear bone measurements in CBCT images.

Materials And Methods: Five polyurethane mandibles, with different levels of bone resorption, were used in this in vitro study. To obtain the reference standard, landmarks were made in the mandibular superior and buccal cortices, and then a digital caliper was used to measure the bone height and thickness at these regions.

Purpose: As the hard palate is a central structure of the skull and is involved in orthodontic and surgical procedures, it would be of interest to study the morphological aspects of this bone and its possible variations as per different patterns of skeletal development. Thus, this study aimed to develop a classification for the different morphological characteristics of the hard palate and to evaluate the relationship between these characteristics and the different skeletal patterns, using cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT).

Materials And Methods: This retrospective and cross-sectional study used CBCT scans of patients seen from January 2014 to December 2016.
