Objective: To investigate associations of maternal and cord blood cytokine patterns with newborn size and body composition.

Methods: This cross-sectional study involved 70 pregnant women and their healthy newborns selected from the "Araraquara Cohort Study". Newborn anthropometric measurements were recorded at birth.

Background: New strategies for collecting post-mortem tissue are necessary, particularly in areas with emerging infections. Minimally invasive autopsy (MIA) has been proposed as an alternative to conventional autopsy (CA), with promising results. Previous studies using MIA addressed the cause of death in adults and children in developing countries.

Klebsiella pneumoniae is a Gram-negative bacterium responsible for severe cases of nosocomial pneumonia. During the infectious process, both neutrophils and monocytes migrate to the site of infection, where they carry out their effector functions and can be affected by different patterns of cell death. Our data show that clinical strains of K.

Inflammatory responses are terminated by the clearance of dead cells, a process termed efferocytosis. A consequence of efferocytosis is the synthesis of the antiinflammatory mediators TGF-β, PGE, and IL-10; however, the efferocytosis of infected cells favors Th17 responses by eliciting the synthesis of TGF-β, IL-6, and IL-23. Recently, we showed that the efferocytosis of apoptotic -infected macrophages by dendritic cells triggers PGE production in addition to pro-Th17 cytokine expression.

Background: Arachidonate-5-lipoxygenase (5-LO) activity and increased leukotriene B4 (LTB4) production have been implicated in various inflammatory conditions. Increased production of leukotrienes has been associated with periodontal diseases; however, their relative contribution to tissue destruction is unknown. In this study, an orally active specific 5-LO inhibitor is used to assess its role in inflammation and bone resorption in a murine model of lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced periodontal disease.

Introduction: Byrsonima species have been used in the treatment of gastrointestinal and gynecological inflammations, skin infections and snakebites. Based on their biological activities, it is important to study other organisms from this genus and to identify their metabolites.

Objectives: To determine the metabolic fingerprinting of methanol and ethyl acetate extracts of four Byrsonima species (B.

Three new isoaigialones, A, B, and C (1-3), along with aigialone (4), were isolated from the crude EtOAc extract of a Phaeoacremonium sp., an endophytic fungus obtained from the leaves of Senna spectabilis. The structures of these compounds were elucidated based on the analysis of spectroscopic data.
