Background and objectives Since the outbreak of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) in the UK, there has been concern that a higher proportion of COVID-19 deaths among inpatients were a result of nosocomial infections. We sought to investigate the proportion of nosocomial COVID-19 infections within our hospital and patient outcomes within this category. Methods This was a retrospective cohort study of 616 patients admitted to the hospital and tested positive for SARS-CoV-2 through a polymerase chain reaction test with particular emphasis on 104 patients who were classed as probable or definite hospital-acquired COVID-19.

In November 2008, acute hepatitis B was confirmed serologically in a 27-year-old man (Case 1) who had been incarcerated since February 2007. The cell mate of Case 1, a 26-year-old man was an established HBV carrier.
