This investigation evaluated the effects of a 13-month deployment to Iraq on body composition and selected fitness measures. Seventy-three combat arms soldiers were measured pre- and postdeployment. Body composition was assessed by dual X-ray absorptiometry (DXA).

Clinical relevance of neuromuscular findings and abnormal movement patterns: a comparison between focal hand dystonia and upper extremity entrapment neuropathies.

NARRATIVE REVIEW: Patients with focal hand dystonia and upper extremity entrapment neuropathies may present with similar symptoms and risk factors making it difficult to distinguish between the two diagnoses. Evaluating for the presence of neuromuscular findings and abnormal movement patterns can help assist the hand therapist in identifying the presence of focal hand dystonia or peripheral motor axon involvement in the absence of pronounced muscle atrophy. The purposes of this review article are twofold.

Sex differences in parameters of bone strength in new recruits: beyond bone density.

Background: Stress fracture (SF) injuries in new recruits have long been attributed to low bone mineral density (BMD). Low areal BMD assessed using two-dimensional dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry imaging, however, reflects structural density and is affected by smaller measures of bone geometry. Recent studies support a relationship between bone size and SF and indicate that slender bones are more susceptible to damage under identical loading conditions.

Effects of a 4-month recruit training program on markers of bone metabolism.

Unlabelled: Stress fracture susceptibility results from accelerated bone remodeling after onset of novel exercise and may be reflected in bone turnover changes. It is unknown if the bone turnover response to exercise is different between sexes.

Purpose: To assess disparity between sexes in bone metabolism markers during military recruit training and to evaluate relationships between bone turnover markers and factors that may affect bone metabolism.

This study examined the accuracy and reliability of the MedGraphics VO2000 (VO2000) portable metabolic system and the ParvoMedics TrueOne 2400 (TrueOne 2400) metabolic cart against the criterion Douglas bag (DB) method.
