Changes in CNS cells in hyperammonemic portal hypertensive rats.

Rats with pre-hepatic portal hypertension because of partial portal vein ligation develop minimal hepatic encephalopathy (MHE) with hyperammonemia, impaired blood-brain barrier, mild brain edema, and severe mitochondrial changes in the hippocampus.
