CAR has two transmembrane isoforms that localize distinctly in polarized epithelial cells. Whereas the seven exon-encoded isoform (CAR) exhibits basolateral localization, the eight exon-encoded isoform (CAR) can localize to the apical epithelial surface where it can mediate luminal adenovirus infection.
