Anti-vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) therapies have transformed the treatment of retinal diseases. However, VEGF signaling is only one component of the complex, multifactorial pathophysiology of retinal diseases, and many patients have residual disease activity despite ongoing anti-VEGF treatment. The angiopoietin/tyrosine kinase with immunoglobulin and epidermal growth factor receptor-2 (Ang/Tie2) signaling pathway is critical to endothelial cell homeostasis, survival, integrity, and vascular stability.

Introduction: Digital platforms serve as an avenue for the tobacco industry to promote both conventional tobacco and emerging products, with a notable focus on capturing the attention of young people through sophisticated marketing campaigns. This research aims to analyze the prevalence of different advertising strategies on digital platforms and to assess the impact of exposure to these strategies on the probability of use initiation and increased consumption of conventional tobacco and new tobacco products among young Spaniards.

Methods: An online survey was conducted on a representative sample of 1730 young Spaniards aged 16-21 years in November 2022 using a comprehensive approach, considering all possible relevant factors and perspectives regarding the issue of the study.

Cognitive impairment in children and adults with cerebrotendinous xanthomatosis: A French cohort study.

Cerebrotendinous xanthomatosis is a rare and treatable metabolic disorder related to the accumulation of cholestanol. This disorder is primarily associated with motor and cognitive impairments, although the latter has not been extensively characterized. The objectives of this work were to define the cognitive profile found in cerebrotendinous xanthomatosis patients, investigate the progression of cognitive impairment over time, and search for radio-clinical correlations.

Background: Financial toxicity, defined as both the objective financial burden and subjective financial distress from a cancer diagnosis and its treatment, is a topic of interest in the assessment of the quality of life of patients with cancer and their families. Current evidence implicates financial toxicity in psychosocial, economic and other harms, leading to suboptimal cancer outcomes along the entire trajectory of diagnosis, treatment, supportive care, survivorship and palliation. We investigated the effects of interannual El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO) events on local weather, Aedes aegypti populations, and combined cases of dengue (DENV), chikungunya (CHIKV), and Zika (ZIKV) viruses in 2 communities with mass mosquito trapping and 2 communities without mosquito control in southern Puerto Rico (2013-2019). Gravid adult Ae. aegypti populations were monitored weekly using Autocidal Gravid Ovitraps (AGO traps).

The evolution of the discharged concentration is calculated through statistical simulations using transition matrices and dispersion ellipses, both based on historical records of surface drifter trajectories. The discharge points are adjacent to urban areas distributed along the coast.

The Search for Cancer Biomarkers: Assessing the Distribution of INDEL Markers in Different Genetic Ancestries.

Cancer is a multifactorial group of diseases, being highly incident and one of the leading causes of death worldwide. In Brazil, there is a great variation in cancer incidence and impact among the different geographic regions, partly due to the genetic heterogeneity of the population in this country, composed mainly by European (EUR), Native American (NAM), African (AFR), and Asian (ASN) ancestries. Among different populations, genetic markers commonly present diverse allelic frequencies, but in admixed populations, such as the Brazilian population, data is still limited, which is an issue that might influence cancer incidence.

Surveillance and Control of Culex quinquefasciatus Using Autocidal Gravid Ovitraps.

We monitored trap captures of Culex quinquefasciatus using an interrupted time-series study to determine if autocidal gravid ovitraps (AGO traps) were useful to control the population of this mosquito species in a community in southern Puerto Rico. Data for this report came from a previous study in which we used mass trapping to control Aedes aegypti, resulting in a significant 79% reduction in numbers of this species.
