Fulminant amoebic colitis is a rare complication of amoebiasis that carries a high mortality rate. Its diagnosis is challenging and requires a high index of suspicion, and its early recognition is a priority to provide timely medical and surgical treatment. We present the case of a male patient who came to the emergency department with unspecific clinical presentation of abdominal pain, systemic inflammatory response and imaging study showing intestinal perforation of the right colon.

Ligation of the intersphincteric fistula tract has been recently employed as definitive treatment of anal fistulas. However, it carries a potential risk of continence impairment, fistula recurrence, and repeated operations. This study aimed to assess postoperative outcomes related to this procedure and evaluate the potential influence of preoperative and intraoperative features.

Anatomical variations of the biliary tree pose diagnostic and treatment challenges. While most are harmless and often discovered incidentally during procedures, some can lead to clinical issues and biliary complications, making knowledge of these variants crucial to prevent surgical mishaps. Here, we present an unusual and clinically significant case.

Introduction And Aim: Intussusception is rare in adults and can occur in the small bowel and colon. Its atypical presentation makes the diagnosis difficult. Article Synopsis
  • Laparoscopic cholecystectomy is the standard treatment for gallbladder disease, but difficult dissections can lead to conversion to open surgery, raising risks for patients.
  • A study analyzed 321 patients with acute cholecystitis to identify factors that predict conversion to open surgery, using logistic regression for their data.
  • Key risk factors included older age, being male, and gallbladder wall thickness, with a final model showing a sensitivity of 84% for predicting conversion, aiding in better patient care and surgical planning.

Background: Multiple serologic markers have been studied to predict complicated acute appendicitis (CAA) (C-reactive protein and procalcitonin); these increase health care costs and are not always available in medical centers in Mexico. There is a need for low-cost serologic markers to predict CAA and guide the preoperative management of patients. Our objective was to analyze the predictive value of hyponatremia and thrombocytosis for complicated acute appendicitis.

Introduction And Aims: The standard of care for gallbladder disease is laparoscopic cholecystectomy. Difficult dissection of the hepatocytic triangle and bleeding can result in conversion to open cholecystectomy, which is associated with increased morbidity. Identifying risk factors for conversion in the context of acute cholecystitis will allow patient care to be individualized and improve outcomes.

Bariatric surgery was introduced in 1953, but during the last 20 years its popularity has increased after the development of significant Romaevidenced based breakthroughs in the field. Currently, approximately 150 long-term randomized clinical trials and 40 meta-analyses support and give credibility to the surgical approaches for the treatment of obesity and its related metabolic disturbances. Bariatric surgery has demonstrated improved outcomes compared to medical treatment, conduct therapy, and endoscopic procedures.
