The objective of this work was to determine the total polyphenols content and antioxidant capacity in beverages made with panela (a natural sweetener obtained after drying the unrefined whole sugarcane juice) in order to assess their potential as sources of antioxidants. In beverages made with three panela brands (A, B and C) with lemon, tangerine and peach flavors, the total polyphenols content was determined using the Folin-Ciocalteu's reactive and antioxidant capacity was determined by three methods: antiradical efficiency DPPH, ferric reducing power (FRP) and oxygen radical absorbance capacity (ORAC). The total polyphenols content ranged from 0.

In poultry industry, cross-contamination due to processing equipment and contact surfaces is very common. This study examined the extent of bacterial attachment to 6 different types and design of conveyor belts: stainless steel-single loop, stainless steel-balance weave, polyurethane with mono-polyester fabric, acetal, polypropylene mesh top, and polypropylene. Clean conveyor belts were immersed separately in either a cocktail of Salmonella serovars (Salmonella Typhimurium and Salmonella Enteritidis) or Listeria monocytogenes strains (Scott A, Brie 1, ATCC 6744) for 1 h at room temperature.

We describe the unexpected behavior of the arylsulfonylacetylenes, which suffer an "anti-Michael" addition of organolithiums producing their alkynylation under very mild conditions. The broad scope, excellent yields, and simplicity of the experimental procedure are the main features of this methodology. A rational explanation of all these results can be achieved by theoretical calculations, which suggest that the association of the organolithiums to the electrophile is a previous step of their intramolecular attack and is responsible for the unexpected "anti-Michael" reactions observed for substituted sulfonylacetylenes.

Background: Oligoanuric forms of postdiarrheal hemolytic uremic syndrome (D+ HUS) usually have more severe acute stage and higher risk of chronic sequelae than nonoligoanuric forms. During the diarrheal phase, gastrointestinal losses could lead to dehydration with pre-renal injury enhancing the risk of oligoanuric D+ HUS. Furthermore, it had been shown that intravenous volume expansion during the prodromal phase could decrease the frequency of oligoanuric renal failure.

NF-κB regulates the expression of Cyclin D1 (CD1), while RAC3 is an NF-κB coactivator that enhances its transcriptional activity. In this work, we investigated the regulatory role of CD1 on NF-κB activity. We found that CD1 inhibits NF-κB transcriptional activity through a corepressor function that can be reverted by over-expressing RAC3.

Introduction: Subcutaneous panniculitis-like T-cell lymphoma (SPTL-AB) and cutaneous gamma/delta T-cell lymphoma (CGD-TCL) are rare T-cell lymphomas with varying clinical courses. There is no standard treatment, although chemotherapy and hematopoietic stem cell transplantation are commonly used. We describe results using bexarotene for children and adults with these disorders.

Aims: One of the important histopathological characteristics of oral epithelial dysplasia is a two-phase appearance of rete processes, comprising an upper layer of keratinized cells and a lower layer of basaloid cells, and thereby creating a sharp contrast between these two separate cell populations. The aim of this study was to determine the cellular adhesion status of the basaloid cells.

Methods And Results: Immunohistochemistry for β-catenin, E-cadherin and their related molecules was carried out in surgical specimens of two-phase epithelial dysplasia of the oral mucosa.

Autophagy and senescence are both processes that firstly avoid tumor development through the inhibition of proliferation of damaged cells. However, autophagy does not imply cell death, because it is also a mechanism of cell survival under stress conditions. Concerning senescence, although these cells do not proliferate, they produce growth factors that contribute to the proliferative response of other cells.

Phytoremediation is an environmental biotechnology that seeks to remediate pollution caused by bioaccumulative toxins like copper (Cu). Symbiotic mycorrhizal associations can increase the uptake and delivery of low mobility nutrients and micronutrients to the host plant because they solubilize these substances and increase their catchment area. To analyze the effect of mycorrhizae on the phytoaccumulation of Cu, we studied their ability to solubilize Cu(II) and enhance its absorption by the plant Tagetes erecta L.

The use of β-ketosulfoxides as nucleophiles in reactions with α,β-unsaturated aldehydes catalyzed by proline derivatives allows complete control of configuration at the two chiral centers that are created during 1,4-addition reactions. The sulfinyl group can be used to create additional chiral centers in the resulting compounds and then removed while preserving the chirality of the carbon joined to the sulfur. The catalyst and the sulfinyl group are mainly responsible for the configurational control of the carbon atoms acting as electrophile and nucleophile, respectively, which allows the preparation of the four possible diastereoisomers in optically pure form.

RAC3 has been firstly characterized as a nuclear receptor coactivator that is found in limited amounts in normal cells, but is over-expressed in tumors and is also an NF-kB coactivator. Although the mechanisms involved in its over-expression are not clear, it is well known that it enhances resistance to apoptosis. In this work, we investigated if there are any additional mechanisms by which RAC3 may contribute to tumor development and if TNF-a, an inflammatory cytokine that is found at high levels in cancer could increase RAC3 levels.

The evolutionarily conserved Notch signal transduction pathway regulates fundamental cellular processes during embryonic development and in the adult. Ligand binding induces presenilin-dependent cleavage of the receptor and a subsequent nuclear translocation of the Notch intracellular domain (NICD). In the nucleus, NICD binds to the recombination signal sequence-binding protein J (RBP-J)/CBF-1 transcription factor to induce expression of Notch target genes.

Five Boc-protected aminooxy and N-alkylaminooxy amines have been synthesized in 60-95% overall yield using a common synthetic strategy from readily available two- and three-carbon Cbz-protected amino alcohols. The amines can be linked to biomolecules via amide formation and incorporated directly into peptoids via submonomer synthesis. Subsequent deprotection of the aminooxy and N-alkylaminooxy groups enables conjugation with desired target molecules via established chemoselective ligation methods.
