Preparing students for diverse careers in the poultry industry.

Careers in the poultry industry are ever evolving to address global challenges and include collaborations with others from diverse backgrounds and cultures from around the world. Employers are seeking college graduates who are prepared to use novel approaches to address local and global industry challenges. A primary goal of undergraduate animal and poultry science programs should be to focus on courses and opportunities for students to engage in activities that promote workforce and essential skill development.

Non-traditional pulmonary function tests in risk stratification of anatomic lung resection: a retrospective review.

Background: Guidelines advocate pulmonary function testing (PFT) in preoperative evaluation before lung resection. Although forced expiratory volume in 1 s (FEV1) and diffusing capacity of the lungs for carbon monoxide (DLCO) are recommended, they are often poor predictors of complications.

Objectives: Determine if PFT testing results other than FEV1 and DLCO are associated with post-operative complications.

Predictive Value of Diaphragm and Lung Ultrasonography for Weaning Failure in Critically Ill Patients with Acute Respiratory Failure Due to COVID-19 Pneumonia.

Background: This study analyzed weaning characteristics and assessed the association of clinical and ultrasonographic indices-maximum inspiratory pressure (MIP), rapid shallow breathing index (RSBI), peak flow expiratory (PFE), diaphragm-thickening fraction (DTF), diaphragm thickness (DT), diaphragm excursion (DE), diaphragm-RSBI (D-RSBI), and lung ultrasound (LUS) patterns-with weaning failure.

Methods: This retrospective cohort study included critically ill COVID-19 patients aged 18 and older who had been on invasive mechanical ventilation for at least 48 h and undergoing weaning. Exclusion criteria included absence of ultrasound assessments, neuromuscular diseases, and chronic cardio-respiratory dysfunction.

Fundoplication at the time of paraesophageal hernia repair does not decrease the rate of hernia recurrence or postoperative reflux.

Background: Fundoplication at the time of paraesophageal hernia (PEH) repair is thought to help prevent the development or persistence of postoperative gastroesophageal reflux (GERD) and might also prevent hernia recurrence. However, the published data is not strong enough to definitively recommend this approach. This study was designed to evaluate the effectiveness and complications of a fundoplication at the time of paraesophageal hernia repair.

Elevated preoperative lower esophageal sphincter pressure predicts improved clinical outcomes after per oral endoscopic myotomy (POEM).

Background: Although per oral endoscopic myotomy (POEM) has shown to be beneficial for the treatment of achalasia, it can be difficult to predict who will have a robust and long-lasting response. Historically, it has been shown that higher lower esophageal sphincter pressures have been associated with poorer responses to alternative endoscopic therapies such as Botox therapy and pneumatic dilation. This study was designed to evaluate if modern preoperative manometric data could similarly predict response to therapy after POEM.

The Role of Structured Goals of Care Discussions in Critically Ill Thoracic Surgery Patients.

The American College of Surgeons recommends structured family meetings (FM) for high-risk surgical patients. We hypothesized that goals of care discussions (GOCD) in the form of an FM, multidisciplinary family meeting (MDFM), or palliative care consult (PCC) would be underutilized in imminently dying thoracic surgery patients. A retrospective chart review at a tertiary academic medical center was performed on all inpatient mortalities and discharges to hospice after any thoracic surgery operation.

In situ imaging of LPMO action on plant tissues.

Lytic polysaccharide monooxygenases (LPMOs) are copper-dependent enzymes that oxidatively cleave recalcitrant polysaccharides such as cellulose. Several studies have reported LPMO action in synergy with other carbohydrate-active enzymes (CAZymes) for the degradation of lignocellulosic biomass but direct LPMO action at the plant tissue level remains challenging to investigate. Here, we have developed a MALDI-MS imaging workflow to detect oxidised oligosaccharides released by a cellulose-active LPMO at cellular level on maize tissues.

A mechanistic modeling and estimation framework for environmental pathogen surveillance.

Environmental pathogen surveillance is a promising disease surveillance modality that has been widely adopted for SARS-CoV-2 monitoring. The highly variable nature of environmental pathogen data is a challenge for integrating these data into public health response. One source of this variability is heterogeneous infection both within an individual over the course of infection as well as between individuals in their pathogen shedding over time.

Patient Driven EKG Device Performance in Adults with Fontan Palliation.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the accuracy of the KardiaMobile (KM) device in adults with a Fontan palliation, and to assess the KM function as a screening tool for atrial arrhythmias. While patient driven electrocardiogram (EKG) devices are becoming a validated way to evaluate cardiac arrhythmias, their role for patients with congenital heart disease is less clear. Patients with single ventricle Fontan palliation have a high prevalence of atrial arrhythmias and represent a unique cohort that could benefit from early detection of atrial arrhythmias.

Proteomics identifies potential immunological drivers of postinfection brain atrophy and cognitive decline.

Infections have been associated with the incidence of Alzheimer disease and related dementias, but the mechanisms responsible for these associations remain unclear. Using a multicohort approach, we found that influenza, viral, respiratory, and skin and subcutaneous infections were associated with increased long-term dementia risk. These infections were also associated with region-specific brain volume loss, most commonly in the temporal lobe.

Does practice make perfect? Studying the relationship between surgeon experience and patient outcomes for paraesophageal hernia repairs.

Background: It has been reported that higher surgeon experience leads to better patient outcomes. In this study, we look at surgeon experience and its association with postoperative outcomes and variation among the practice of surgeons performing paraesophageal hernia repairs (PEH).

Method: This was a retrospective study of 1155 patients who underwent PEH repair at a single institution (2010-2023).

Update of How Pediatric Cardiologists Noninvasively Evaluate Patients with Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome: 2013 vs. 2023.

Noninvasive functional assessment of systemic right ventricles (RV) in hypoplastic left heart syndrome (HLHS) is challenging. This study aimed to compare pediatric cardiologists' current noninvasive imaging practices to those reported in 2013. A web-based survey was distributed to pediatric cardiologists via various listservs which queried timing of echocardiograms during HLHS palliative stages and measurements of RV function.

[Percutaneous aortic valve replacement by trans-carotid approach: First case in Chile].

The indication for percutaneous aortic valve implantation (TAVI) has increased considerably in recent years, preferably using transfemoral access (TF); however, it is not clear which should be the preferred access in the event of contraindications to the latter. We present an 81-year-old patient with high surgical risk in whom a 50% obstruction of the descending aortic lumen was identified and so, a left transcarotid access was chosen. Numerous alternative approaches to the TF approach have been described in recent years.

eIF1 and eIF5 dynamically control translation start site fidelity.

Translation initiation defines the identity of a synthesized protein through selection of a translation start site on a messenger RNA. This process is essential to well-controlled protein synthesis, modulated by stress responses, and dysregulated in many human diseases. The eukaryotic initiation factors eIF1 and eIF5 interact with the initiator methionyl-tRNA on the 40S ribosomal subunit to coordinate start site selection.

Vaccine Uptake and Intentions: Insights from a Texas Survey on Factors Influencing COVID-19 Vaccination Decisions.

The effectiveness of COVID-19 vaccines depends on widespread vaccine uptake. Employing a telephone-administered weighted survey with 19,502 participants, we examined the determinants of COVID-19 vaccine acceptance among adults in Texas. We used multiple regression analysis with LASSO-selected variables to identify factors associated with COVID-19 vaccine uptake and intentions to receive the vaccine among the unvaccinated.

High prevalence of dengue, Zika, and chikungunya viruses in blood donors during a dengue outbreak and an endemic period in Colombia.

Objective: Arboviruses pose a challenge in ensuring the supply of pathogen-free blood components because they are not routinely screened in blood banks, and blood components from infected asymptomatic donors could be transfused. This study aimed to detect and characterize arboviral infections in Colombian blood donors.

Methods: In a cross-sectional study, the prevalence of dengue (DENV), Zika (ZIKV), and chikungunya (CHIKV) viruses and co-infections of blood donors were compared between an epidemic period (November 2019-February 2020,  = 462) and an endemic period (November 2021-August 2022,  = 1,119).

Total Hip Arthroplasty in Dyggve-Melchior-Clausen Syndrome: Literature Review and Case Report.

Dyggve-Melchior-Clausen (DMC) disease is a rare spondyloepiphyseal autosomal recessive disorder characterized by skeletal dysplasia and intellectual disability. Hip arthritis, often secondary to hip dysplasia, presents at an early age. Current literature suggests that osteotomies do not benefit DMC syndrome-associated hip disease but reports of total hip arthroplasty in these patients are lacking.

Is Minimally Invasive Resection of Large Thymoma Appropriate?

Background: Current practice patterns suggest open rather than minimally invasive (MIS) approaches for thymomas >4 cm. We hypothesized there would be similar perioperative outcomes and overall survival between open and MIS approaches for large (>4 cm) thymoma resection.

Methods: The National Cancer Database was queried for patients who underwent thymectomy from 2010 to 2020.

Changes in Televisit Modalities Due to the COVID Pandemic in Chile: A Comparison of Patient Satisfaction.

Background: The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has impacted healthcare guidelines and modalities of patient consultation worldwide. The frequent cycles of quarantine confinement in Chile have caused mobility restrictions for patients and physicians, forcing the Hospital Las Higueras de Talcahuano (HHT) to replace the assisted televisit modality with a more classic televisit program. Here we have described if this change in televisit modality and type of outpatient may have impacted patients' satisfaction.

Influence of Home Language Use on the Association Between Parent Education and Child Adiposity in Latino Families.

Background: Parent education and language use are associated with child obesity, but the impact of their interaction is less known. This study assessed whether parent education was associated with child adiposity and if this association was moderated by home language use in Latino families.

Methods: Participants (n = 415) were Latino families from the Long Beach area.
