An epoxy based on diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A was reacted with a long-chain poly(oxypropylene diamine) hardener in the presence of an accelerator, resulting in a flexible epoxy network. Tensile properties were tested as a function of accelerator concentration. All systems exhibited high levels of extensibility, with strain at failure values in excess of 65%.

A range of modified amine- and anhydride-cured epoxy systems based upon diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A was produced, through the systematic incorporation of moieties termed functional network modifiers (FNMs) that serve to change the network structure in controlled ways. Here, the chosen FNM was trimethylolpropane triglycidyl ether (TTE). The resulting materials were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, thermal analysis, dielectric spectroscopy and measurements of direct current conduction.

The effect of nanosilica surface chemistry on the electrical behavior of epoxy-based nanocomposites is described. The nanosilica was reacted with different volumes of (3-glycidyloxypropyl)trimethoxysilane and the efficacy of the process was demonstrated by infrared spectroscopy and combustion analysis. Nanocomposites containing 2 wt % of nanosilica were prepared and characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), AC ramp electrical breakdown testing, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and dielectric spectroscopy.

Article Synopsis
  • * The research shows how the application of LbL coatings affects space charge accumulation, electrical voltage breakdown, and resistance to corona discharge in the polycarbonate substrate.
  • * Results indicate that the arrangement of colloidal silica nanoparticles can alter the characteristics of trapped space charges and enhance the material's performance against corona discharge by modifying energy distribution from laser impacts.
