Synthetic Guaiacol Derivatives as Promising Myeloperoxidase Inhibitors Targeting Atherosclerotic Cardiovascular Disease.

Myeloperoxidase (MPO) is known to cause oxidative stress and inflammation leading to cardiovascular disease (CVD) complications. MPO-mediated oxidation of lipoproteins leads to dysfunctional entities altering the landscape of lipoprotein functionality. The specificity of guaiacol derivatives toward preventing MPO-mediated oxidation to limit MPO's harmful effects is unknown.

Induction of early biomarkers in a thrombus-induced sheep model of ischemic heart failure.

The levels of brain natriuretic peptide (BNP) and monocyte chemoattractant protein-1 (MCP-1) are known to be increased in the sera of subjects with heart failure. Existing models do not account for the biomass of thrombus that occurs in patients undergoing myocardial infarction. In this study, we compared the expressions of sheep-derived genes for BNP, MCP-1, and atrial natriuretic peptide in a new large-animal model of thrombus-induced heart failure.

Peritoneal macrophages are distinct from monocytes and adherent macrophages.

Objective: Peritoneal macrophages are used in many studies related to atherosclerosis. In situ, they are non-adherent and upon culturing, they adhere and function as scavengers of modified lipoproteins and dead apoptotic cells. They also produce growth factors, suggesting that they may provide life-supporting function as well.

Induction of brain natriuretic peptide and monocyte chemotactic protein-1 gene expression by oxidized low-density lipoprotein: relevance to ischemic heart failure.

Brain natriuretic peptide (BNP) and monocyte chemotactic protein-1 (MCP-1) are biomarkers of heart failure (HF). The aim of the present study was to determine the role of oxidized low-density lipoprotein (Ox-LDL) in the induction of these biomarkers and the signaling pathways involved in vitro. Incubation of HL-1 cardiomyocytes and human myocytes with Ox-LDL induced the expression of BNP and MCP-1 genes, while native LDL had no effect.
