In this work, we demonstrate that a simple argentometric titration is a scalable, fast, green and robust approach for producing AgCl/antibiotic hybrid antimicrobial materials. We titrated AgNO into tetracycline hydrochloride (TCH) aqueous solution, thus forming AgCl/TCH in a one-step procedure. Furthermore, we investigated the one-pot synthesis of triply synergistic super-nanoantimicrobials, combining an inorganic source of Ag ions (AgCl), a disinfecting agent (benzyl-dimethyl-hexadecyl-ammonium chloride, BAC) and a molecular antibiotic (tetracycline hydrochloride, TCH).

To explore green gold leaching reagents, a series of imidazolium cyanate ionic liquids (ILs), 1-ethyl-3-methyl-imidazolium cyanate ([CMIM][OCN]), 1-propyl-3-methyl-imidazolium cyanate ([CMIM][OCN]) and 1-butyl-3-methyl-imidazolcyanate ([CMIM][OCN]) were synthesized and characterized by Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR), Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) and thermogravimetric (TG) analysis. In this research, the imidazolium cyanates were utilized as a solute, which not only decreased the usage of ILs but also increased their gold dissolution capability. The gold dissolution performances of three imidazolium cyanates were characterized by dynamic leaching test and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM).

Graft modification is an effective approach to improve the water solubility and molecular weight of chitosan. This work investigated the effect of grafting rate on water solubility of chitosan-grafted polyacrylamide (Chi-g-PAM) using molecular dynamics simulations. The intramolecular and intermolecular interaction between Chi-g-PAM with the grafting rate of 100%-250% and water together with the conformation change were analyzed by radial distribution function (RDF), radius of gyration, solvation free energy (ΔG), mean square displacement, diffusion coefficient and shear viscosity.

At present, although spectral imaging is known to have a great potential to provide a massive amount of valuable information, the lack of reference methods remains as one of the bottlenecks to access the full capacity of this technique. This work aims to present a staining-based reference method with digital image treatment for spectral imaging, in order to propose a fast, efficient, contactless and non-invasive analytical method to predict the presence of biofilms. Spectral images of Pseudomonasaeruginosa biofilms formed on high density polyethylene coupons were acquired in visible and near infrared (vis-NIR) range between 400 and 1000 nm.

We aimed at investigating the effects of using stiletto style shoes with different heel heights on balance and climbing up the stairs. Assessments were conducted in three conditions (barefoot, 4 cm, 10 cm heels) on 40 women who are familiar with stiletto heels. This study aims to investigate applicability of poly(epsilon-caprolactone) (PCL) biodegradable films for repair of gaps in Achilles tendons in a rat model, also comparing surgical repair versus no repair approaches. PCL was synthesized with tailor-made properties, then, PCL films were prepared by solvent casting. Seventy-five outbred Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly allocated into five groups: (i) sham operated (skin incision only); (ii) no repair (complete division of the Achilles tendon and plantaris tendon without repair); (iii) Achilles repair (with a modified Kessler type suture); and (iv) plasty of Achilles tendon defects with the biodegradable PCL films, and (v) animals subjected to 1 cm mid-substance defect with no repair.

Study Design: Harvesting of autologous bone graft from the posterior iliac crest for lumbar spinal fusions is a frequently performed procedure in orthopedic surgery. The most common complication associated with this procedure is an alteration in sensation over the donor site manifested as chronic pain, hyperesthesia, dysesthesia, or diminished sensitivity resulting from superior cluneal nerve (SCN) injury.

This study investigated the relevance of a mangled extremity severity score (MESS) to the evaluation of intracompartmental pressure in injured patients. We measured intracompartmental pressures with a modification of the Whitesides method and compared these values with MESS in 27 patients after trauma. For 5 of them fasciotomy was necessary to relieve high intracompartmental pressures.
