Academic writing is a complex task involving microstructure (linguistic-level) and macrostructure (coherence structure) indices. Our goal was to examine the contribution of an academic writing intervention programme among students with intellectual disability at the microstructure and macrostructure levels while characterising the learning curves. Six students with mild intellectual disability studying for a BA (MCA = 30.

Purpose: We examined the role of narrative microstructure (production of words and sentences) and narrative macrostructure (organization of events) in the use of internal state terms (ISTs) in narratives of bilingual children with developmental language disorder (DLD) in their school language (SL).

Method: Fifty-eight Russian-Hebrew bilingual preschool children aged 55-78 months divided into two groups participated: 16 bilingual children diagnosed with bilingual DLD and 42 with typical language development (TLD). Narratives were elicited in SL/Hebrew using the wordless picture book, Narratives were transcribed and coded for frequency of ISTs and classified as perceptual, linguistic, motivational, linguistic, emotional, or physical.

Background: Patients with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) experience recurrent symptoms and anxiety disorders that significantly impact their quality of life (QoL). The aim of the study was to assess in daily practice the benefit of the combination of three probiotic strains (Lactobacillus plantarum CETC 7484 and CETC 7485; Pediococcus acidilactici CECT 7483) plus vitamin D in patients with diarrhea-predominant IBS (IBS-D) or IBS with mixed bowel movements (IBS-M).

Methods: This was a prospective, multicenter, non-interventional study in adult patients with IBS-D or IBS-M (Rome IV criteria) followed by private-practice gastroenterologists.

Purpose: We investigated the impact of narrative task complexity on macrostructure in both languages of bilingual kindergarten children and the relationship of macrostructure across languages to guide practitioners' choice of assessment tools and aid in interpretation of results.

Method: Thirty-nine English-Hebrew bilingual kindergarten children ( = 65 months) retold two narratives in each language: a one-episode story and a three-episode story. Stories were coded for macrostructure using five story grammar (SG) elements: Internal State-Initiating Event, Goal, Attempt, Outcome, and Internal State-Reaction.

Echocardiography is a fundamental component of pediatric cardiology, and appropriate indications have been established for its use in the setting of suspected, congenital, or acquired heart disease in children. Since the publication of guidelines for pediatric transthoracic echocardiography in 2006 and 2010, advances in knowledge and technology have expanded the scope of practice beyond the use of traditional modalities such as two-dimensional, M-mode, and Doppler echocardiography to evaluate the cardiac segmental structures and their function. Adjunct modalities such as contrast, three-dimensional, and speckle-tracking echocardiography are now used routinely at many pediatric centers.

Purpose: Bilingual children often demonstrate a high rate of disfluencies, which might impact the diagnostic evaluation of fluency disorders; however, research on the rates and types of disfluencies in bilinguals' two languages is limited. The purpose of this research is to profile disfluencies of two types, stuttering-like disfluencies (SLDs) and other disfluencies (ODs), in the speech of Russian-Hebrew bilingual typically developing children, focusing on cross-linguistic differences and the effect of language proficiency in both languages.

Method: Spontaneous narratives based on the (Mayer, 1969) picture book were collected in both languages from 40 bilingual Russian-Hebrew children aged 5;6-6;6 (years;months).

At the time of the growing obesity epidemic worldwide, liver transplantation (LT) and metabolic syndrome are closely linked: non-alcohol-related fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is one of the leading indications for liver transplantation, and metabolic syndrome can also appear after liver transplantation, in relation to immunosuppressive medications and weight gain, whatever was the initial liver disease leading to the indication of LT. Therefore, the role of bariatric surgery (BS) is important due to its longer-lasting effect and efficacy. We performed a retrospective review of all 50 adult French liver transplant recipients who had a history of bariatric surgery, including 37 procedures before transplantation, and 14 after.

The present study examined disfluencies in the narratives of Russian-Hebrew bilingual children with Developmental Language Disorder (DLD) and Typical Language Development (TLD) in both Russian (home language) and Hebrew (societal language), with a focus on the independent and combined effects of language disorder and cross-linguistic differences on the rates and loci of disfluencies. Narratives were collected from 44 bilingual children (14 with DLD), ages 5;7-6;6, using a story retelling procedure. The narrative coding system targeted ratios of the following disfluencies (per C-unit): silent pauses, repetitions, self-corrections, and filled pauses.

Targeted neonatal echocardiography (TNE) has been increasingly used at the bedside in neonatal care to provide an enhanced understanding of physiology, affecting management in hemodynamically unstable patients. Traditional methods of bedside assessment, including blood pressure, heart rate monitoring, and capillary refill are unable to provide a complete picture of tissue perfusion and oxygenation. TNE allows for precision medicine, providing a tool for identifying pathophysiology and to continually reassess rapid changes in hemodynamics.

Importance: Paediatricians play an integral role in the lifelong care of children with CHD, many of whom will undergo cardiac surgery. There is a paucity of literature for the paediatrician regarding the post-operative care of such patients.

Observations: The aim of this manuscript is to summarise essential principles and pertinent lesion-specific context for the care of patients who have undergone surgery or intervention resulting in a biventricular circulation.

Importance: Single ventricle CHD affects about 5 out of 100,000 newborns, resulting in complex anatomy often requiring multiple, staged palliative surgeries. Paediatricians are an essential part of the team that cares for children with single ventricle CHD. These patients often encounter their paediatrician first when a complication arises, so it is critical to ensure the paediatrician is knowledgeable of these issues to provide optimal care.

States have broad discretion over the implementation of policies like Medicaid expansion and other policies that impact the well-being and integration of immigrants. While numerous studies document Medicaid expansion on immigrants' health insurance coverage and the role of state immigrant policy climates on immigrants' well-being, no research to date has studied whether the association between a state's Medicaid expansion on immigrants' health insurance coverage varies based on the inclusiveness or exclusiveness of a state's immigrant policy climate. We combine nationally representative data from the 2014-2018 American Community Survey (ACS) with state policy data and estimate multivariate regression models.

Individuals with intellectual disability may have limited narrative skills. The novelty of this study lies in the examination of strengths and weaknesses which may enable a more facilitative approach to narrative and other storytelling-based methodologies among adults with intellectual disability who study in an academic enrichment program in comparison to typical students with the same chronological age. Seventeen adult students with intellectual disability and 16 typically developing students, produced narratives which were examined for microstructure (e.

Purpose: Diagnostic tools developed for monolinguals are frequently used for bilingual linguistic assessment. The absence of evaluation criteria for using monolingual norms for bilinguals contributes to inconsistent diagnostic procedures, impacting research and clinical practice. This study considers the reliance on monolingual tools to assess the heritage language to identify bilingual atypical language development (ALD) even when bilingual norms are available for the societal language.

Bilingual language development is different from monolingual language development. The lack of appropriate assessment tools geared to the bilingual population has led to inaccurate over-diagnosis of bilingual children with typical language development (TLD) as children with Developmental Language Disorder (DLD) and under-diagnosis of bilingual children with DLD. The present paper addresses this challenge by focusing on Hebrew as a second language (L2) of bilingual preschool children whose first language (L1) is either English or Russian, taking into consideration both chronological age (CA) and age of onset of bilingualism (AOB).

The presence of a genetic condition is a risk factor for increased mortality in hypoplastic left heart syndrome (HLHS). Speckle tracking strain analysis in interstage echocardiograms have shown promise in identifying patients with HLHS at increased risk of mortality. We hypothesized that fetuses with a genetic condition and HLHS have impaired right ventricular global longitudinal strain compared with fetuses with HLHS and no evident genetic condition.

Research in recent years has explored the vocabulary size (lexical breadth) of bilingual children, but less is known about the richness of bilingual word knowledge (lexical depth), and about how knowledge of words in the two languages interact. This study explores how bilingual narrative intervention with vocabulary instruction in each language may modulate crosslinguistic influence (CLI) between the languages of bilingual kindergarten children, focusing on CLI of lexical knowledge, and which factors modulate performance. Forty-one typically developing English-Hebrew bilingual children ( = 64.

During the initial surge of the COVID-19 pandemic in the spring and summer of 2020, paediatric heart centres were forced to rapidly alter the way patient care was provided to minimise interruption to patient care as well as exposure to the virus. In this survey-based descriptive study, we characterise changes that occurred within paediatric cardiology practices across the United States and described provider experience and attitudes towards these changes during the pandemic. Common changes that were implemented included decreased numbers of procedures, limiting visitors and shifting towards telemedicine encounters.
