A prospective study of health-related quality of life outcomes among men treated for intermediate- and high-risk prostate cancer: the impact of primary and secondary therapies.

Introduction: To assess the impact of primary and secondary therapies for high- and intermediate-risk prostate cancer on health-related quality of life (HRQoL).

Materials And Methods: A prospective study was initiated in 2007 at Center for Prostate Disease Research Multicenter National Database sites. Longitudinal patterns in HRQoL from baseline (pre-treatment) to 5 years post-diagnosis were examined for patients with high- and intermediate-risk prostate cancer, treated by radical prostatectomy (RP) or external beam radiation therapy (EBRT).

Association of prostate cancer SLCO gene expression with Gleason grade and alterations following androgen deprivation therapy.

Background: SLCO-encoded transporters have been associated with progression to castration-resistant prostate cancer (CRPC) after initiation of androgen deprivation therapy (ADT). Although expressed at lower levels than in CRPC tissues, SLCO-encoded transporters may also play a role in response of primary prostate cancer (PCa) to ADT and biochemical recurrence.

Methods: We systematically explored expression of the 11 human SLCO genes in a large sample of untreated and ADT-treated normal prostate (NP) and primary PCa tissues, including tumors treated with neoadjuvant abiraterone.

Risk Factors and Significance of Gentamicin Resistant Positive Urine Culture in Patients Undergoing Urological Surgery: A Short Report.

We assessed patients who had pre-operative urine that grew gentamicin-resistant bacteria but were given gentamicin prophylaxis because urine result was not available. Our aim was to identify postoperative-sepsis rates, risk factors to acquire resistant-bacteria, and to optimize our prophylactic regime. Total 4,933 pre-operative urine-samples were reviewed and those positive for or (n = 979) were analysed.

Transurethral resection of the prostate--"now and then".

The number of transurethral resections of the prostate (TURP) performed each year is decreasing. The aim of this study was to assess a cohort of patients undergoing TURP and compare this to one twenty years earlier in terms of procedure, complications and outcomes. A retrospective comparative analysis of one hundred consecutive TURPs performed in 2010 was compared to one hundred cases performed in 1990.

Delayed contrast-enhanced MRI to localize Botox after cystoscopic intravesical injection.

Purpose: There is a lack of studies to show localization of botulinum toxins (BoNT) within bladder wall and/or absorption rates. Our study examined the later distribution of BoNTA/gadolinium within the bladder wall by performing a delayed MRI scan after intravesical injection. This potentially may help to explain the level and mechanism at which BoNT may be producing its effect.

A patient reported outcome measure (PROM) assessing quality of care in the urology hospital outpatient setting.

A prospective blind PROM (patient reported outcome measure) study performed in our urology department examined the outpatient-clinic experience. 104 questionnaires were completed. 23 patients (22%) felt the waiting times for appointments was excessive.

A single United Kingdom center experience of open partial nephrectomy using regional ischemia.

Introduction: Different techniques are used in open partial nephrectomy (OPN) for localized renal cancer, with variable impact on renal function. Regional renal ischemia technique by using different clamps and without the need to occlude renal vessels is gaining popularity. In our study, we present the largest international series; and the first in the United Kingdom; describing OPN using soft bowel clamp.

A 30-year experience of Millin's retropubic prostatectomy: Has this classic operation derived by a President of the College in Ireland stood the test of time?

Introduction: In patients with large gland volume, open prostatectomy/adenoma enucleation remains a valuable surgical option in treating large obstructing prostates. We report our series of open prostatectomies spanning 32 years from a single institution.

Patients And Methods: We retrospectively reviewed all patients who underwent open prostatectomy between 1980 and 2012.

Incidental renocolic fistula with xanthogranulomatous pyelonephritis.

Introduction: We report the case of a 66-year-old female undergoing elective nephrectomy for a non-functioning kidney in whom an incidental renocolic fistula was detected.

Presentation Of Case: She presented with recurrent urinary tract infections and left flank pain. Investigations revealed a nonfunctioning left kidney with a large staghorn calculus and features suggestive of xanthogranulomatous pyelonephritis (XPG).

Percutaneous nephrolithotomy in adult patients with spina bifida, severe spinal deformity and large renal stones.

Aims: To present our experience in patients with spina bifida with severe spinal abnormality undergoing percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL) for large stone burden.

Patients And Methods: A retrospective review identified five spina bifida patients with abnormal spinal curvature who had a PCNL for large kidney stones. The mean age was 28 years.

The incidence and relevance of prostate cancer in radical cystoprostatectomy specimens.

Purpose: To review the incidence, histopathological features and clinical outcomes of patients with incidental prostate cancer (CaP) found in cystoprostatectomy specimens (CP) excised for bladder cancer and to determine whether these prostate cancers could affect the follow-up strategy.

Patients And Methods: We retrospectively reviewed the records of 110 patients who underwent CP for bladder cancer (1998-2011) at our institution. CaP grade, stage, volume and surgical margin status were recorded.

Regional variations in testicular cancer rates in Ireland.

Background: Traditionally, the incidence of testicular cancer (TCa) has shown a remarkable geographical variation.

Aims: To examine whether the rates of TCa varied within Ireland itself and to find possible explanations for any observations made.

Methods: We observed the incidence of TCa in counties in Ireland between January 1994 and December 2007.

A 16-year-old female presented with acute-onset abdominal pain and an initial diagnosis of midcycle pain. Subsequent pelvic ultrasound and diagnostic laparoscopy showed a large mass in the pouch of Douglas. The patient underwent a laparotomy and excision of a mass from a loop of jejunum.
