Importance: Current interventions for posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) are efficacious, yet effectiveness may be limited by adverse effects and high withdrawal rates. Acupuncture is an emerging intervention with positive preliminary data for PTSD.
Objective: To compare verum acupuncture with sham acupuncture (minimal needling) on clinical and physiological outcomes.
Introduction: The postacute sequelae of COVID-19 (PASC) is a serious heterogeneous condition that affects a significant minority of those who endured COVID-19. PASC involves multiple body systems and an illness trajectory that has stages now being identified in medical research.
Objective: Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and acupuncture are well suited to conceptualize and treat PASC and other postviral conditions.
Background: The long-COVID syndrome (LCS), defined by residual symptoms from acute COVID-19 for <60 days, affects about one-third of all COVID survivors and is an emerging public health challenge. Empirical data about the range of symptoms or the utility of acupuncture alone for the LCS are very limited.
Case: This observational case study of a 46-year-old male with LCS was conducted to preliminarily define the range of symptoms, a Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) diagnostic structure, and evaluate the potential utility of prescribed acupuncture for LCS.
Background: Tens of thousands of cardiac and vascular surgeries (CaVS) are performed on seniors in Canada and the United Kingdom each year to improve survival, relieve disease symptoms, and improve health-related quality of life (HRQL). However, chronic postsurgical pain (CPSP), undetected or delayed detection of hemodynamic compromise, complications, and related poor functional status are major problems for substantial numbers of patients during the recovery process. Eosinophils are recruited to sites of inflammation via the action of a number of chemical mediators, including PAF, leukotrienes, eotaxins, ECF-A and histamine. Although many of the cell-surface receptors for these mediators have been identified, histamine-driven chemotaxis has not been conclusively attributed to any of the three known histamine receptor subtypes, suggesting the possibility of a 4th histamine-responsive receptor on eosinophils. We have identified and cloned a novel G protein-coupled receptor (GPCR), termed Pfi-013, from an IL-5 stimulated eosinophil cDNA library which is homologous to the human histamine H3 receptor, both at the sequence and gene structure level.

The behaviour was found to be mostly heterosexual and ranged from love and caring to romance and outright eroticism. Reactions varied, being accepting of love and care but often objecting to erotic behaviour.

We found optimal activity in derivatives with electron-withdrawing groups in the benzoic acid ring and with an unsubstituted C-3 benzyl group on the chromanol nucleus. While compounds containing a 3-(4-phenyl)benzyl chromanol substituent were potent LTB4 receptor antagonists, the increased lipophilicity imparted by the additional phenyl substituent led to decreased potency in the presence of plasma proteins.

How do dementia patients relate to their image in the mirror? Is the use of the mirror effective in raising levels of self-awareness, calmness and satisfaction? The survey was carried out on 100 patients suffering from dementia: 67 women and 33 men aged between 67 and 85. Method: They measured regional brain metabolism with [18F]-fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) and positron emission tomography in 15 outpatients with the diagnosis of cocaine abuse and 17 normal comparison subjects. Ten of the patients were studied less than 1 week after they had last had cocaine, and five were studied 2-4 weeks after withdrawal.
To assess the effects of chronic cocaine intoxication on dopamine receptors in human subjects, the authors evaluated [18F]N-methylspiroperidol binding using positron emission tomography in 10 cocaine abusers and 10 normal control subjects. Cocaine abusers who had been detoxified for 1 week or less showed significantly lower values for uptake of [18F]N-methylspiroperidol in striatum than the normal subjects, whereas the cocaine abusers who had been detoxified for 1 month showed values comparable to those obtained from normal subjects. The authors conclude that postsynaptic dopamine receptor availability decreases with chronic cocaine abuse but may recover after a drug-free interval.

Ganglioside radioactivity showed the largest increase--approximately eightfold--in the optic nerve tract at 8 days after optic nerve crush while sialoglycoprotein radioactivity increased fourfold under the same conditions. As regeneration proceeded the magnitude of the increase in the nerve tract diminished for both glycoconjugates.
