Purpose: To determine risk factors for intraocular lens opacification (IOLop) after Descemet membrane endothelial keratoplasty (DMEK) and to analyze clinical outcomes after IOL exchange.

Methods: Cross-Sectional Study: Analysis of all cases of IOL exchange because of post-DMEK IOLop with a minimum of 6-month postoperative follow-up observed in clinic between November 2021 and April 2022. Main outcomes analyzed at the study visit were change in logarithm of the minimum angle of resolution (logMAR) best-corrected visual acuity after IOL exchange, endothelial cell loss (ECL), and graft survival.

The efficacy and safety of Descemet's membrane endothelial keratoplasty (DMEK) and ultrathin Descemet stripping automated endothelial keratoplasty (UT-DSAEK) have been recently compared in several systematic reviews (SRs). The aim of this study was to assess the evidence quality of such SRs, in order to obtain a scientifically rigorous comparison between the two techniques. We performed a systematic review of SRs and meta-analyses comparing the efficacy and safety between UT-DSAEK and DMEK up to 24th March 2023, using 3 electronic databases (PubMed, Cochrane Library, Google Scholar) plus manual reference search.

We report the effect of COVID-19 confinement on some psychological variables associated with mental health: Stress perception, types of coping strategies during crises, and some components related to resilience. A national sample of the Mexican population was considered in a total of 2775 people whose ages ranged from 15 years and older. Questionnaires that met the psychometric criteria (reliability and validity) to be used in Latino samples were used.

Increasing reports of cyanobacteria or cyanotoxins around the world expose a major threat for the environment, animal, and human health. Current water treatment processes are ineffective at eliminating cyanotoxins; hence, risk management relies mostly on early detection and on the development of specific regulatory frameworks. In developed countries, well-documented monitoring activities offer a good assessment of the cyanobacterial and/or cyanotoxin status and are used to prevent intoxications.

A putative xanthorhodopsin-encoding gene, XR34, was found in the genome of the moderately halophilic gammaproteobacterium Salinivibrio socompensis S34, isolated from modern stromatolites found on the shore of Laguna Socompa (3570 m), Argentina Puna. XR-encoding genes were clustered together with genes encoding X-carotene, retinal (vitamin-A aldehyde), and carotenoid biosynthesis enzymes while the carotene ketolase gene critical for the salinixanthin antenna compound was absent. To identify its functional behavior, we herein overexpressed and characterized this intriguing microbial rhodopsin.

Modern non-lithifying stromatolites on the shore of the volcanic lake Socompa (SST) in the Puna are affected by several extreme conditions. The present study assesses for the first time light utilization and functional metabolic stratification of SST on a millimeter scale through shotgun metagenomics. In addition, a scanning-electron-microscopy approach was used to explore the community.

Article Synopsis
  • Central-Andean ecosystems are harsh environments with high levels of solar and UV radiation, hosting diverse microbial life that can survive extreme conditions.
  • Researchers studied a strain of Actinobacterium, Nesterenkonia sp. Act20, found in the soil of Lake Socompa, showcasing its remarkable resistance to UV, desiccation, and heavy metals.
  • Act20's genome reveals capabilities for producing various useful compounds, including antibiotics and proteins, suggesting significant biotechnological applications in areas like agriculture and industry.

"High-altitude Andean Lakes" (HAAL) are pristine environments harboring poly-extremophilic microbes that show combined adaptations to physical and chemical stress such as large daily ambient thermal amplitude, extreme solar radiation levels, intense dryness, alkalinity, high concentrations of arsenic (up to 200 ppm) and dissolved salts. In this work, we compared the UV resistance profiles, pigment content and photoreactivation abilities of three UV-resistant bacteria isolated from distinct niches from HAALs, that is Acinetobacter sp. Ver3 (water, Lake Verde; 4400 m), Exiguobacterium sp.

Background: Historically, cervical cancer in early stages has been treated with radical hysterectomy and radiotherapy with no option in keeping the uterine-ovarian function. Since two decades ago, evidence shows these cases are candidates for radical trachelectomy, a procedure capable of preserving the fertility without affecting the oncological outcome.

Objective: To analyze reproductive results among patients treated with radical trachelectomy, in a reference center from the northeast of Mexico.
