Implants are a predictable and effective method for replacing missing teeth. Some clinicians have advocated extraction and replacement of compromised but treatable teeth on the assumption that implants will outperform endodontically and/or periodontally treated teeth. However, evidence shows that conventional therapy is as effective as implant treatment.

Review of models for titanium as a foreign body.

A growing number of theories has evolved attempting to explain the process of dental implant failure. Titanium implants utilized outside of the mouth have exhibited breakdown through a foreign body reaction. Phenomena occurring in the body, such as passive dissolution, osteolysis and metallosis, have not been discussed relative to dental implants.

The non-surgical management of a patient with Kostmann syndrome-associated periodontitis: a case report.

Kostmann syndrome is a rare, congenital immunological disorder caused by a mutation of the hematopoietic cell-specific LYN substrate 1-associated protein X1. These patients pose a unique challenge to the dental practitioner due to the severe oral infections that are often seen in this population. The patient described in this report is a 16-year-old female with Kostmann syndrome-associated periodontitis.

Down syndrome-associated periodontitis: a critical review of the literature.

Down syndrome, or trisomy 21 (T21), was first described by John Langdon Down in 1866. Down identified the phenotypic expression of patients with circulation and coordination problems as having Down syndrome. More than a century later, Jerome Lejeune hypothesized that nondysjunction during meiosis could lead to trisomy of the 21st chromosome.

Long-term onlay graft volume maintenance in aggressive periodontitis patients.

Treatment planning in the esthetic zone has classically presented some of the greatest challenges to the practitioner. The purpose of this article is to describe a staged, multidisciplinary approach and follow-up to a case of aggressive periodontitis. Microbial sampling for suspected periodontopathogens was taken before and after treatment.

Aggressive periodontitis has had many names as well as theories behind its etiology. The current paper looks to investigate this history and show the evolution of both nomenclature and understanding. Going beyond academic debates, emerging trends and conventions are also examined and placed into a clinical perspective.

Long-term block graft stability in thin periodontal biotype patients: a clinical and tomographic study.

Purpose: To assess the esthetic and functional outcome, as well as the volume maintenance, of autogenous block grafts placed in anterior sextants of thin periodontal biotype subjects over a long-term period.

Materials And Methods: Fifteen consecutive patients were followed up yearly for an average of 40 months after autogenous block grafting. Preoperative and postoperative cone beam computed tomographic scans were analyzed to evaluate bone volume maintenance around the implants placed in the grafted sites.
