Background: Elderly patients may present with visual function impairment after surgery, which may increase the incidence of postoperative delirium and falls and decrease their quality of life. The aim of this study was to assess visual function in elderly patients after long-duration nonocular surgery to determine the incidence and risk factors for visual function impairment after surgery.

Methods: This prospective and observational study included patients aged between 60 and 80 years who had been scheduled for elective nonocular surgery expected to last longer than 120 minutes under general anesthesia.

Purpose: To demonstrate optical coherence tomography efficacy to evaluate macular anatomical outcomes, in eyes with silicone oil-filled vitreous cavity after vitrectomy.

Methods: A descriptive observational study of 28 (twenty-eight) patients submitted to pars plana vitrectomy having silicone oil as vitreous substitute. The macular findings were observed by means of indirect binocular ophthalmoscope, biomicroscopy and optical coherence tomography examinations.

Purpose: To evaluate the features of idiophatic vitreomacular traction syndrome (VMT) with ocular coherence tomography (OCT--Stratus), before and after vitrectomy; to identify situations where ocular coherence tomography provides additional information on disease morphology and pathogenesis.

Methods: Comparative retinal ocular coherence tomography imaging was performed in four patients with different stages of vitreomacular traction syndrome.

Results: Standard-resolution ocular coherence tomography Stratus provides vitreous-retinal images that help the management and treatment of vitreomacular traction syndrome.

The use of intraocular lenses was a great advance in visual recovery after cataract surgery. Although usually with good biocompatibility, some alterations in the intraocular lens material may occur after implantation. Polymethylmethacrylate was the first intraocular lens material to be used on a large scale and assumed to be inert and well-tolerated.
