Sensitivity to many visual stimuli, and, in particular, image displacement, is reduced during a change in fixation (saccade) compared to when the eye is still. In these experiments, we studied the sensitivity of observers to ecologically relevant image translations of large, complex, real world scenes either during horizontal saccades or during fixation. In the first experiment, we found that such displacements were much less detectable during saccades than during fixation.

The multifold bioactive medicinal properties of ginseng have been closely linked to its antioxidative ability, which is related to its ginsenoside content. Since the key mechanism of radiation-induced cell death and tissue damage is the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) that attack cellular DNA, this study focuses on the impact of a standardized North American ginseng extract (NAGE) on (137)Cs-induced oxidative stress in human peripheral lymphocytes (PBL) obtained from 10 healthy individuals (6M/4F), 42.7 +/- 4.

We hypothesized that it is the conflict between various cues to distance that have produced results purportedly showing that vergence eye movements induced by disparity change are not an effective cue for depth. Single and compound stimuli were used to examine the perceived motion in depth (MID) produced by simulated motion oscillations specified by disparity, relative disparity, and/or looming. Estimations of the extent of MID and binocularly recorded eye movements showed that the vergence induced by disparity change is indeed an effective cue for motion in depth in conditions where looming information does not conflict with it.

Background: Romanowsky stains are used routinely by veterinary clinical pathology laboratories for cytologic and blood film evaluations. Automated stainers are available for both aqueous and methanolic Romanowsky stains. Mast cell granules and canine distemper virus inclusions are known to stain differently by these 2 methods, but we have noticed differences in the staining characteristics of other granulated cells.

Background: The purpose of this study was to investigate the immunological impact of combining neoadjuvant total androgen suppression (TAS) with radiotherapy (xRT) in the treatment of prostate cancer by monitoring blood cytokine levels.

Patients And Methods: Participants were stage I-II prostate cancer patients receiving xRT alone (n=18) or TAS+xRT (n=19) under the procedures outlined in RTOG protocols #94-08 and #94-13. Peripheral blood samples were collected immediately prior to TAS (xRT+TAS group), immediately prior to xRT, 24 hours after initiation of xRT, and weekly during xRT.

Cholangiocarcinoma (CC) is emerging as an important treatment indication for photodynamic therapy. CCs are generally unresectable locally invasive tumors that occlude the biliary tree leading to fatal cholangitis and liver failure. Biliary decompression via stenting offers symptomatic relief but does not control tumor growth.

Hepatic stellate cells (HSCs) mediate hepatitis C virus (HCV)-related liver fibrosis, and increased HSC activation in human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)/HCV coinfection may be associated with accelerated fibrosis. We examined the level of HSC activation in HIV/HCV-coinfected and HCV-monoinfected subjects and its relationship to the level of activation and gene expression of peripheral immune cells in coinfected subjects. HSC activation levels positively correlated with peripheral CD4+ and CD8+ T cell immune activation and were associated with enhanced interleukin-15 (IL-15) gene expression, suggesting a pathogenic role for IL-15-driven immunomediated hepatic fibrosis.

There is a long history of research into depth percepts from very large disparities, beyond the fusion limit. Such diplopic stimuli have repeatedly been shown to provide reliable depth percepts. A number of researchers have pointed to differences between the processing of small and large disparities, arguing that they are subserved by distinct neural mechanisms.

We carried out this in vitro molecular study to investigate the effect of two clinical X-irradiation modalities (a two-dimensional external beam radiotherapy referred to in this article as conventional RT, and a three dimensional conformal intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) on a colon adenocarcinoma HT-29 cell line. Cells were synchronized by serum deprivation 48 h before irradiation so that >90% of them were in the G(0)/G(1) phase of the cell cycle. Cells were allowed to recover 3 h after irradiation before total RNA extraction.

Xenopus Vg1RBP is a member of the highly conserved IMP family of four KH-domain RNA binding proteins, with roles in RNA localization, translational control, RNA stability, and cell motility. Vg1RBP has been implicated in localizing Vg1 mRNAs to the vegetal cortex during oogenesis, in a process mediated by microtubules and microfilaments, and in migration of neural crest cells in embryos. Using c-mos morpholino, kinase inhibitors, and constitutely active recombinant kinases we show that Vg1RBP undergoes regulated phosphorylation by Erk2 MAPK during meiotic maturation, on a single residue, S402, located between the KH2 and KH3 domains.

Photodiagnosis (PD) for cutaneous malignancy attempts to differentiate between normal and diseased skin without the need for histological evaluation. This technique exploits natural or induced differences in fluorescent signatures between these tissues. The technique may be as simple as using ultraviolet light in combination with clinical exam to as complex as optical tomography.

Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is an innovative minimally invasive therapy that has great potential for both tumor ablation and normal tissue preservation. However, while in recent years the standards of surgery, radiation and chemotherapy have dramatically improved in terms of outcomes and morbidity, the same cannot be said of PDT in general and Photofrin((R))-based PDT in particular. As currently practiced PDT dosimetry has not really improved tumor ablation and diminished side effects over reports from two decades ago.

Photodynamic therapy (PDT) and bio-nanotechnology (NT) show striking similarities in clinical design and mechanistics. The PDT paradigm of photosensitizer application, light activation and singlet oxygen generation does in fact occur on the nanoscale level as does the resultant outcomes. NT has the ability to explain as well as modify each of the critical steps of PDT particularly photosensitizer design and delivery, light source miniaturization and optimization, location and intensity of the photodynamic reaction as well as offering a far greater insight into dosimetry and mechanisms of action.

The stereoscopic system tolerates some vertical misalignment of the images in the eyes. However, the reported tolerance for an isolated line stimulus (approximately 4 degrees) is greater than for a random-dot stereogram (RDS, approximately 45 arcmin). We hypothesized that the greater tolerance can be attributed to monoptic depth signals (E.

The benefits of binocular vision have been debated throughout the history of vision science yet few studies have considered its contribution beyond a viewing distance of a few meters. In the first set of experiments, we compared monocular and binocular performance on depth interval estimation and discrimination tasks at 4.5, 9.
